{"id":1015104,"date":"2026-06-09T10:19:29","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T10:19:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1015104\/"},"modified":"2026-06-09T10:19:29","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T10:19:29","slug":"eu-increases-support-to-contain-ebola-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1015104\/","title":{"rendered":"EU increases support to contain Ebola outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commissioner for crisis management Hadja <strong>Lahbib<\/strong> has announced <strong>\u20ac16.5 million <\/strong>in additional EU support to stop the Ebola outbreak,<strong> <\/strong>after visiting frontline responders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and engaging with the African Union and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>This includes:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u20ac6.5 million to strengthen the Africa Pathogen Genomics Initiative, to help equip frontline teams train healthcare workers and improve surveillance through diagnostics<\/li>\n<li>\u20ac5 million to the World Health Organization to strengthen surveillance and access to supplies (e.g. PPE), and <\/li>\n<li>in kind contribution of \u20ac5 million worth of testing equipment, including rapid diagnostic devices and lab test kits, to be deployed quickly where they are most needed.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This additional support is subject to the approval of the budgetary authority.<\/p>\n<p>In Bunia, DRC, Commissioner <strong>Lahbib<\/strong> met frontline health workers and humanitarian partners working on Ebola treatment, infection prevention and control, community engagement, and logistics. In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, she held meetings with the African Union and Africa CDC to strengthen coordination and accelerate action across borders.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Hadja <strong>Lahbib <\/strong>said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2018Health security is a shared responsibility: viruses do not stop at borders; they do not care about politics.\u00a0 Europe will continue to stand with Africa CDC, with WHO, and with the communities on the front line of this outbreak. This is about more than containing a virus.\u00a0 It is about proving that when lives are at stake, the world can still come together and act.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In May, the European Commission had already allocated \u20ac15 million in emergency humanitarian assistance for the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ec.europa.eu\/document\/download\/8ea2332b-c2c1-4210-a744-dd9779ca36e0_en?filename=security_ebola-response_factsheet_en.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ebola response<\/a> in the DRC and Uganda.
