{"id":1017349,"date":"2026-06-10T10:39:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T10:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1017349\/"},"modified":"2026-06-10T10:39:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T10:39:31","slug":"glasgow-architects-display-regeneration-concepts-for-fire-ravaged-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1017349\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow architects display regeneration concepts for fire-ravaged site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The designs were all drawn up by Glasgow-based professionals and were displayed at a PechaKucha-style presentation event on Tuesday 26 May, organised by a group of city planning students from the University of Glasgow, at the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/myglasgow\/estates\/timetabling\/roomphotos\/boydorr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boyd Orr Building<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event sought ideas to reimagine the site, which remains cordoned off following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/massive-blow-listed-victorian-building-lost-to-glasgow-fire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fire in March<\/a>. The fire started in a vape shop and caused the partial collapse of the 175-year-old B-listed structure at Union Corner.<\/p>\n<p>The original building was designed by James Brown of Brown and Carrick in 1851 for Francis Orr &amp; Sons.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-828632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_0931-highlight.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"322\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Union Corner building on fire in March, credit Vyromedia<\/p>\n<p>Participants presented designs inspired by the site location as an icon of the city centre, Glasgow\u2019s \u2018temperate rainforest climate\u2019, and the hosepipes used in March to fight the fire with water from the Clyde.<\/p>\n<p>Becca Thomas, director at New Practice, envisioned three different options ranging in scale, with the smallest prioritising security using display boards to protect the site, and the largest proposing public use of the site as a gathering and events space as well as housing greenery and planting pots.<\/p>\n<p>Finni Porter Chambers, a spatial designer and researcher, similarly imagined a space for public use, including green planting inspired by the hosepipes used to tackle the fire, to create a rest and play area with water features and outdoor seating.<\/p>\n<p>Pete Smith, an architect at Collective Architecture, submitted a vision for a community building open to all age groups to serve as a local landmark; while Duncan McLean, director of landscape architecture at LUC, sought to improve access to Glasgow Central Station with a new civic space providing space for shops, caf\u00e9s, play areas and the free movement of pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny Le Masurier, graduate interior designer at MLA, presented a \u2018living threshold\u2019 concept, where the site would act as a point of relief for travellers, incorporating greenery as well as caf\u00e9s and seating; and Felicity Steers, director at erz landscape architecture, blended \u2018the green and the grey\u2019 in a design inspired by buildings that are covered in, or entwined with, plant life.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-828230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Collective-Architects-union-street.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"469\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Union Corner proposal by Pete Smith, architect, Collective Architecture<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline_image_source\" style=\"font-size:12px; max-width: 479px;\">Source: Pete Smith<\/p>\n<p>The event was organised by former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/author\/charlotte-banks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Construction News<\/a> journalist Charlotte Banks of the university\u2019s Urbanism Society. She said: \u2018After yet another devastating fire in Glasgow\u2019s city centre, the city\u2019s design talent has responded with a characteristic enthusiasm and creativity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The range and originality of ideas shared for the site is a real testament to the city\u2019s creative spirit.
