{"id":1020219,"date":"2026-06-11T17:58:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T17:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1020219\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T17:58:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T17:58:18","slug":"condemnation-condemnation-condemnation-of-israel-but-no-sanctions-at-next-eu-summit-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1020219\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Condemnation, condemnation, condemnation\u2019 of Israel, but no sanctions at next EU summit \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Germany and the Czech Republic are blocking all sanctions on Israel, while Italy sits on the fence, even though EU leaders will repeatedly \u201ccondemn\u201d Israeli aggression at next week\u2019s summit.<\/p>\n<p>The German and Czech ambassadors told the other 25 at a meeting of the \u2018Political and Security Committee\u2019 in the EU Council in Brussels on Tuesday (9 June) that they were against blacklisting an extremist Israeli minister or banning trade with West Bank settlers, according to diplomatic sources.<\/p>\n<p>The German and Czech EU embassies declined to confirm or deny the information.<\/p>\n<p>This meant there would be no visa ban on Israeli security minister Itmar Ben-Gvir, which needed EU27 consensus, despite his personal <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/217981\/eu-appalled-again-by-israel-this-time-over-ben-gvirs-gaza-flotilla-humiliation-but-continues-doing-nothing\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/217981\/eu-appalled-again-by-israel-this-time-over-ben-gvirs-gaza-flotilla-humiliation-but-continues-doing-nothing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brutality toward EU nationals<\/a> on an aid flotilla to Gaza in May.<\/p>\n<p>And Slovenia\u2019s new pro-Israeli prime minister, populist Janez Jan\u0161a, would probably veto too, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TKajzer\/status\/2062941368540921890\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TKajzer\/status\/2062941368540921890\" rel=\"nofollow\">based on his X posts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>France and some 10 other EU states were also pushing to ban EU imports from settlers, which could most likely be done by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/council-eu\/how-does-the-council-vote\/qualified-majority\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/council-eu\/how-does-the-council-vote\/qualified-majority\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">qualified majority vote (QMV)<\/a>, and which would only be attained if Italy got on board.<\/p>\n<p>But Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni declined to take a clear position either way when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governo.it\/it\/articolo\/le-comunicazioni-del-presidente-meloni-vista-del-consiglio-europeo-del-18-e-19-giugno\/32058\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.governo.it\/it\/articolo\/le-comunicazioni-del-presidente-meloni-vista-del-consiglio-europeo-del-18-e-19-giugno\/32058\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spoke in parliament on Thursday<\/a> about her EU summit plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are \u2026 awaiting the European Commission\u2019s proposals on possible restrictions on products from settlements, which we will evaluate on their merits, including from a technical and legal perspective,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But, speaking more generally, she said the EU should not be too harsh on Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe that isolating Israel can be a European objective or strategy.
