spoke in parliament on Thursday<\/a> about her EU summit plans.<\/p>\n\u201cWe are \u2026 awaiting the European Commission\u2019s proposals on possible restrictions on products from settlements, which we will evaluate on their merits, including from a technical and legal perspective,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
But, speaking more generally, she said the EU should not be too harsh on Israel.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t believe that isolating Israel can be a European objective or strategy. Israel\u2019s isolation is a dangerous phenomenon \u2026 [it] ends up strengthening the most extremist positions both within Israel and among Israel\u2019s enemies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The official commission \u201cproposals\u201d on the settler-import ban have been long in coming, not least due to internal inertia from EU officials.<\/p>\n
In a show of friendly ties on Monday, for instance, Israel\u2019s foreign minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar spoke by video at a \u2018High Level Seminar to combat antisemitism and foster Jewish life\u2019 in the commission Brussels.<\/p>\n
An Israeli foreign ministry official in charge of \u201cpublic diplomacy\u201d, Yacov Livne, joined the seminar in person, as did an EU official in charge of combatting antisemitism, Katharina von Schnurbein.<\/p>\n
