(Credits: EPA)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you agree with our readers?\u00a0Have your say on these\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/author\/letters-editor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MetroTalk<\/a>\u00a0topics and more in the comments.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tStarmer&#8217;s right on talent, but businesses must help Brits into work\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Neil (MetroTalk, Wed) says the UK\u2019s <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">economy<\/a> needs the \u2018brightest and best talent from around the world\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir Starmer <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/12\/full-list-changes-uk-immigration-rules-announced-keir-starmer-today-23070941\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in his speech this week <\/a>on migration made exactly the same point, stating that Britain must still \u2018compete for the best talent in the world in science, technology and healthcare\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>A big problem faced by the UK (apart from an ageing population) is that the number of <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/26\/young-ill-work-twentysomethings-calling-sick-20350155\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under-65s on long-term sickness benefit<\/a> has risen massively in recent years. Many can\u2019t work but I\u2019m sure some \u2013 with support and better pay, conditions and opportunities \u2013 could or would. But with businesses able to source relatively low cost and unskilled labour from abroad, what is in it for business to train and support people from the UK who are not in the labour market?<\/p>\n<p>Also, where is the driver for better wages and working conditions? <strong>Neil, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">York<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wind farms won\u2019t cut it<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-658599072.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23087067\" alt=\"Nuclear power plant with dusk landscape.\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIs nuclear energy the answer? (Credits: Getty Images\/iStockphoto)<\/p>\n<p>Vince\u2019s letter on support of net zero (<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/12\/readers-mourn-the-sycamore-gap-tree-and-ask-whos-fighting-for-the-planet-23071200\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MetroTalk, Tue<\/a>), is wrong on a number of levels. Wind farms are not the answer to our energy problems. The average output of a turbine is significantly lower than its theoretical maximum and if it is too windy they have to be turned off.<\/p>\n<p>You actually become energy insecure and dependent on foreign sources. We\u2019ve seen it with the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-government\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government<\/a> refusing to back Whitehaven coking plant in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/cumbria\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cumbria<\/a> then doing a deal to import coking coal from <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/japan\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a> to keep furnaces running at Britain\u2019s last virgin steel plant. Nuclear is the answer but for some reason we frown upon it. Like her,\u2028I lived through that era and do not recall, for example, the Sex Pistols advocating the murder of Tory MPs, as the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/29\/kneecap-issue-searing-statement-claims-support-hamas-22990080\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Irish hip-hop band did<\/a>. <strong>Jeremy, London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Churchill\u2019s stance on Europe evolved<\/p>\n<p>Chris H (<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/12\/readers-mourn-the-sycamore-gap-tree-and-ask-whos-fighting-for-the-planet-23071200\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MetroTalk, Tue<\/a>) is partially correct that Winston Churchill was sceptical of a federal European body. However, by the late 50s he had changed his mind and, in August 1961, wrote a letter stating that \u2018the government are right to apply to join the EEC\u2019. <strong>Lewis Gibson, Birmingham<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grammar flashbacks from St Custards<\/p>\n<p>All the letters regarding gerunds reminded me of Nigel Molesworth, the gorriler of 3B at St Custards skool as written and drawn by Geoffrey Willans and Ronald Searle back in the 1950s. The article was refreshingly accurate. The only error was in a caption for \u2018water buffalo\u2019 \u2013 which, to the best of my knowledge, are only found in Asia.
