Trying to figure out what items go in which bin is a never ending task. One item which is constantly in debate is takeaway boxes. Everyone loves a takeaway treat, but once you\u2019ve finished your meal, what do you do with the boxes?<\/p>\n
With so many different rules<\/a> across different councils in the UK it\u2019s tricky to know for sure – but a bin man has settled the debate for good. Posting on TikTok<\/a> with the name TheNo1 Binman, he revealed exactly where each kind of takeaway box needs to go – and it\u2019s not the recycling.<\/a><\/p>\n In a recently posted video he revealed that takeaway boxes do not go in the recycling, saying \u201cI don\u2019t know any councils that will take them”.<\/p>\n He continues: \u201cThis means pizza boxes – yes they are cardboard, but once they get grease on them they are no longer recyclable so do not put them in your paper bin.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that some councils do allow you to put pizza boxes in your compost bins – but make sure you check the rules for your area.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not just pizza bins though. You might think that your burger wrappers or bags can be recycled but this is rarely the case.<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cIt goes straight in your general waste bin. The paper bag, if it’s clean, can go in there; if it\u2019s dirty, then no.\u201d<\/p>\n For things like a kebab box, it\u2019s the same rule. They must be put in general waste – however, unlike paper and cardboard boxes, even if polystyrene is clean it cannot go in the recycling.<\/p>\n No matter how spotless the empty box is, it must go into your general waste.<\/p>\n Some commenters on the video disagree, saying they have always put their cardboard pizza boxes in the recycling and have never had an issue. However, the issue comes when the recycling needs to be processed – if there is contaminated waste in there, it can\u2019t be recycled.<\/p>\n So even if your bin does get picked up, it won\u2019t be recycled once it gets to the facilities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Trying to figure out what items go in which bin is a never ending task.
