(WLUC) – Residents of a Keweenaw town gathered Friday to meet up with the residents of their sister city in the United Kingdom.

The village of Calumet held a special community event Friday morning to celebrate its sister-city relationship with Camborne, Cornwall. In addition to installing a sign outside the Calumet Theatre highlighting this relationship, the village and residents linked up with the Camborne Town Council and its residents for a virtual event featuring stories, singing, and shared cultural food.

“We decided to take the opportunity with the Cornish twinning community here in Calumet, as well as the Keweenaw Kernewek, to get together with our sister city in Camborne,” Calumet Village Manager Megan Haselden said. “Heritage really makes up where we come from and who we are today. And in Calumet, in particular, history is really important to us.”

Haselden says the twinning between the two locations came about due to the shared Cornish and mining heritage. She also says the goal behind the twinning is to help keep that heritage alive. But both towns were not the only sisters to meet up during the event.

“Camborne has another sister city, Moonta, in South Australia, and they actually were able to join with us as well,” Haselden continued. “They had a representative that just put out a newsletter for their Cornish society and included our event. It was just a happy accident. They were doing research as part of their newsletter and came across our event.”

Haselden says she hopes to arrange more events with Calumet’s sister city in the future. However, she also says that linking up with other sister cities is a possibility.

“I think Calumet has a lot of different connections in a lot of potential sister cities,” Haselden added. “It would be really cool to connect with other people across the seas, to learn from each other. Here, what we’re doing, and the similarities that we have between our communities today has been really fascinating to find out.”

The video above will feature the TV6 livestream until staff can clip the corresponding story, if available, from broadcasts or other TV6 content.
