For all his talents within the legendary output of Pink Floyd<\/a>, drummer Nick Mason often seems to get the short end of the stick when it comes to acclaim and adulation. <\/p>\n

Overshadowed by the larger-than-life personalities around him, Mason was rarely the focal point of Pink Floyd\u2019s mythology. Yet his understated presence became one of the band\u2019s greatest strengths, providing a steady anchor amid the shifting creative visions of Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and David Gilmour.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it was because Mason<\/a> wasn\u2019t a flashy drummer. In a genre where advanced technique and explosive skill were valued above all else, Mason never actually seemed to have much of an ego about what he played. He would often keep simple and hypnotic beats, occasionally swapping out sticks for mallets to add a more symphonic flavour to songs. On some tracks, he sits out completely, content with letting songs like \u2018A Pillow of Winds\u2019 mostly float on without him.<\/p>\n

But Mason always played to whatever the given song\u2019s strengths were. \u2018Money\u2019 required a drum pattern that was highly repetitive and uncluttered so that the band wouldn\u2019t get caught up in the atypical 7\/4 time signature. When \u2018Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2\u2019 called for a disco beat, that\u2019s exactly what Mason delivered. On sprawling tracks like \u2018Shine on You Crazy Diamond\u2019 or \u2018Dogs\u2019, Mason buckles down and simply keeps the momentum going, preferring to keep his part of the arrangement from getting in the way.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s genius, and his drum tracks are just as essential to the makeup of Pink Floyd<\/a> as any of the other instrumentalists. But Mason also had one major disadvantage when compared to his other three bandmates: he was the only member of the band who didn\u2019t sing. While Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Richard Wright all got lead vocal opportunities throughout the band\u2019s catalogue, Mason never got a true lead vocal. <\/p>\n

While that absence may seem unusual in hindsight, it reflected the natural division of labour within the group. Mason appeared comfortable contributing where he was most effective rather than seeking the spotlight, a quality that helped maintain balance within an increasingly complex band dynamic.<\/p>\n

Mason contributed some non-singing parts to Floyd songs, like the exaggerated voice during the verses of \u2018Corporal Clegg\u2019 and the spoken word section of \u2018Learning to Fly\u2019. But he also provided a single spoken word line in one of the group\u2019s most famous instrumentals.<\/p>\n

That was during \u2018One of These Days\u2019, the opening track to the band\u2019s 1971 album Meddle. A roaring instrumental featuring aggressive instrumentation and prominent delay, \u2018One of These Days\u2019 was a concert staple that represents one of the earliest examples of Pink Floyd truly beginning to find their sound outside the immense influence of Syd Barrett. The piece is almost entirely without vocals, except for a sinister message delivered around the halfway point of the track: \u201cOne of these days I\u2019m going to cut you into little pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n

That low and garbled threat actually came courtesy of Mason, who direct it at BBC radio announcer Jimmy Young. \u201cPossibly the most interesting thing about \u2018One of These Days\u2019 is that it actually stars myself as vocalist, for the first time on any of our records that actually got to the public,\u201d Mason explained to Charlie Kendall in 1984. \u201cIt\u2019s a rather startling performance involving the use of a high voice and slowed down tape.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason originally voiced the sentence in falsetto, and when it was slowed down to appropriate speed, took on a gravelly and demonic cadence. Although it isn\u2019t really \u201csung\u201d by Mason in the traditional sense, \u2018One of the These Days\u2019 would be one of Mason\u2019s only vocal contributions for the entirety of Pink Floyd\u2019s career. <\/p>\n

Although Mason\u2019s vocal contribution on \u2018One of These Days\u2019 lasts only a few seconds, it remains one of the most memorable moments in Pink Floyd\u2019s catalogue. More broadly, it serves as a reminder that his importance to the band was never measured by how often he stepped forward, but by how effectively he supported the music from behind the kit.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
