{"id":1024259,"date":"2026-06-13T15:03:23","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1024259\/"},"modified":"2026-06-13T15:03:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:03:23","slug":"stoic-duke-of-kent-90-stands-proud-on-buckingham-palace-balcony-for-trooping-the-colour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1024259\/","title":{"rendered":"Stoic Duke of Kent, 90, stands proud on Buckingham Palace balcony for Trooping the Colour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Duke of Kent has been a working royal since reigning from the British Army in 1976, but it was over two decades prior that, aged 18, he swore to be the \u2018liege man of life and limb\u2019 for his cousin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/topic\/queen-elizabeth-ii\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Elizabeth II<\/a>, at her Coronation. \u2018I always felt I wanted to support her,\u2019 he wrote in his 2022 memoirs: \u2018That\u2019s by far the most important thing in life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Recent years have been challenging for the diligent Duke, who continues to mourn his wife, Katharine, Duchess of Kent, following her death in September <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/topic\/2025\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2025<\/a>. When the Duke\u2019s daughter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/topic\/lady-helen-taylor\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lady Helen Taylor<\/a>, was asked last year whether her father might soon consider retiring, she cautioned that he may soon look to wind down his royal engagements. \u2018I don\u2019t want him to. I mean, he sort of is naturally, because his body won&#8217;t let him go at the speed that he would like to,\u2019 she told True Royalty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/topic\/TV\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TV<\/a>, \u2018but I don&#8217;t want him to retire because what will he do?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, if this year\u2019s schedule is anything to go by, the Duke is still willing and able to serve the Firm however he can. Last month, he stood side-by-side with King Charles, joining forces with his cousin for a service of the Order of St Michael and St George, where he serves as Grand Master of the Order, at St.Paul&#8217;s Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Image may contain Prince Richard Duke of Gloucester Prince Edward Duke of Kent Sophie Countess of Wessex and Person\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ResponsiveImageContainer-dkeESL cQPiWi responsive-image__image\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2226503827.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Trooping the Colour 2025: The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke of Kent and Sir Tim Laurence<\/p>\n<p>Max Mumby\/Indigo\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>On 18 February, he joined his brother, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/topic\/prince-michael-of-kent\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prince Michael of Kent<\/a>, and his cousin, the Duke of Gloucester, at the Army &amp; Navy Club on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/topic\/pall-mall\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pall Mall<\/a> for the Senior Serving and Retired Officers\u2019 Briefing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/topic\/prince-edward\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prince Edward<\/a> kicked off the year with a dinner commemorating his 60th anniversary as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatler.com\/topic\/westminster\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Westminster<\/a> and Keystone Chapter Number 10 of the United Grand Lodge of England. This was followed up by a visit to Wigmore Hall, one of his beloved patronages, to attend a concert by Dame Imogen Cooper.
