{"id":1024520,"date":"2026-06-13T18:04:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T18:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1024520\/"},"modified":"2026-06-13T18:04:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T18:04:18","slug":"list-of-winners-for-saroj-lal-awards-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1024520\/","title":{"rendered":"List of winners for Saroj Lal Awards announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Primary and secondary school pupils from across Edinburgh were acknowledged in three award categories: Proud to be me, How prejudice makes me feel and Artivism. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year more than 250 pupils were involved in submitting a creative entry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The awards invited nominations from schools highlighting work in any art form, from the written word to film or animation, inspired by the themes of equality, inclusion and diversity. <br \/>Head teachers were also encouraged to nominate a staff team from their school for their creative and collaborative work around equalities.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" data-attachment-id=\"647504\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/2026\/06\/list-of-winners-for-saroj-lal-awards-announced\/sarojlalawards2026_25_pilrigparkschool\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SarojLalAwards2026_25_PilrigParkSchool-scaled-e1781371798711.jpg?fit=1200%2C798&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1200,798\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"SarojLalAwards2026_25_PilrigParkSchool\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Winners of the 2026 Saroj Lal awards. \u00a9 Supplied&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SarojLalAwards2026_25_PilrigParkSchool-scaled-e1781371798711.jpg?fit=1024%2C681&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SarojLalAwards2026_25_PilrigParkSchool.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-647504\"\/>Winners of the 2026 Saroj Lal awards. \u00a9 Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The list of winners was as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proud to be me \u2013 primary schools\u2019 category: Nika Roi \u2013 P5 Bruntsfield Primary School<\/li>\n<li>Proud to be me \u2013 secondary schools\u2019 category: \u201cThis is Me!\u201d and Choir \u2013 Pilrig Park School \u2013 a whole school project\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>How prejudice makes me feel \u2013 primary schools\u2019 category: Lexi Armstrong \u2013 P7 Star of the Sea RC Primary School<\/li>\n<li>How Prejudice makes me feel \u2013 secondary schools\u2019 category: \u201cNothing About Us Without Us\u201d \u2013 Kaimes School \u2013 Kaimes Media Class.<\/li>\n<li>Artivism \u2013 primary schools\u2019 category: \u201cRoots to Rhythm\u201d \u2013 Prestonfield Primary School \u2013 a whole school project\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Artivism : secondary schools\u2019 category: Salma Hassan \u2013 S2 Boroughmuir High School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Staff Awards\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Currie Primary School \u2013 Emma Boag McGlynn and Frances Jack<\/li>\n<li>Prestonfield Primary School \u2013 The Equalities Leadership Team\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Bruntsfield Primary School \u2013 Donna English and Gillian Knust<\/li>\n<li>Boroughmuir Secondary School \u2013 Erin Cowan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saroj Lal was one of the first Asian women to teach in a Scottish primary school when she began her role at South Morningside Primary School in 1970. Among her works included being at the forefront of race relations, delivering anti-racism training and starting the first local authority interpreting and translating service in Edinburgh. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following her death in 2020, Saroj\u2019s achievements in equality, women\u2019s rights, education, and community work have been formally recognised in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cllr James Dalgleish, Education, Children and Families Convener, hosted the awards and said:\u00a0 \u201cSaroj Lal was a true inspiration, both in her trailblazing role at South Morningside Primary School and as a renowned campaigner for race relations and equality, and I\u2019m delighted that her legacy lives on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEntries to this year\u2019s awards demonstrate real creativity and feeling around the themes of equality, inclusion and diversity, and the calibre was extremely high. Well done to the winners and all those who submitted an entry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mrs Lal\u2019s son, Vineet Lal, said: \u201cOnce again, the calibre and creativity of entries has been incredible, with so much thought and consideration put into submissions. My thanks to all those who have got involved this year in creating artwork that challenges inequality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSaroj would be proud to see that the awards are now in their fourth year with even more children and young people getting involved.
