{"id":10251,"date":"2025-04-11T08:01:17","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T08:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/10251\/"},"modified":"2025-04-11T08:01:17","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T08:01:17","slug":"german-led-push-to-open-eu-defense-deal-to-uk-and-canada-hits-french-opposition-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/10251\/","title":{"rendered":"German-led push to open EU defense deal to UK and Canada hits French opposition \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>France is determined to secure more advantageous fishing rights\u00a0in return for a U.K.-EU defense deal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uk-eu-defense-pact-really-does-depend-on-fish-european-minister-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to several officials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Security Action For Europe (SAFE) loan plan is part of a broader package that includes exempting defense spending from EU budget limits set and channeling private funding toward the defense industry.<\/p>\n<p>The thorniest issue, however, is whether the U.K., Canada and the U.S. would be allowed to take part in joint purchases under the initiative. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-freeze-us-multi-billion-defense-plan-arm-makers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the Commission\u2019s initial framework<\/a>, they are out as they do not have a defense deal with the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2207695832-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6422241\"  \/>EU ambassadors discussed a plan to offer countries \u20ac150 billion in cheap loans to spend on defense, but the Berlin-led effort to include the non-EU countries ran into opposition from France. | Philippe Lopez\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The proposal limits joint procurement to Ukraine, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein, as well as countries vying to join the EU and those with a security and defense partnership with Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>A group of around 10 countries including Germany, Netherlands and Sweden supported opening the joint procurement scheme to the U.K. and Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all agree on what should be done: more openness.
