{"id":1026207,"date":"2026-06-14T14:17:28","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T14:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1026207\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T14:17:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T14:17:28","slug":"a-man-wouldnt-undress-me-and-put-me-in-a-bikini-so-why-can-ai-news-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1026207\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;A man wouldn&#8217;t undress me and put me in a bikini &#8211; so why can AI?&#8217; | News Tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/grok-change-comp-cd75.gif\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28725121\" alt=\"A headshot of Jess Asato with the words 'Groks' over her mouth and in the background.\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tTrolls made a video on Grok, she says, of the Labour MP being chloroformed (Picture: Metro\/House of Commons)<\/p>\n<p>Like millions of us, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/labour-party\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Labour<\/a>\u2019s Jess Asato frequents the popular social media site <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/twitter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in the back of her mind, Asato, 45, wonders if the next user she interacts with <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/01\/15\/grok-ai-still-creating-sickening-images-real-people-despite-saying-wouldnt-26306162\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">could be undressing her<\/a> using <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI<\/a> tools.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the MP for Lowestoft in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/suffolk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Suffolk<\/a> was allegedly among millions of women digitally undressed by people using <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/elon-musk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a>\u2019s chatbot, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/grok\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grok<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve spoken to many, many victims and what they\u2019ve told me is how I feel,\u2019 Asato tells <strong>Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/TELEMMGLPICT000488359536_17805194226840_trans_NvBQzQNjv4Bq6dXLgsh8X89kjeZhBOr8jlhf1TkVgICqvHD0L3hInM.jpeg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28644162\" alt=\"A headshot of Jess Asato.\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tJess Asato is calling on people to join her claim (Picture: House of Commons)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A bit more afraid, you don\u2019t know who is out there or what they might be doing to your image. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The idea that, at any moment, you could be targeted just for speaking out or existing online.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Asato <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/06\/04\/labour-mp-jess-asato-sues-elon-musks-xai-deepfake-bikini-picture-28643668\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lodged a legal complaint against<\/a> xAI, which owns Grok and X, last week over the alleged nonconsensual images.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018AI has turbocharged misogyny\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Asato joined X, then called Twitter, in 2009 \u2013 just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/July-15\/twitter-launches\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two years <\/a>after it launched.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was a pretty joyous place,\u2019 she recalls, saying she saw Twitter as a way for people to talk about politics on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t last long. One of Asato\u2019s first experiences with misogyny on the platform was in 2014, when she commented on the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2016\/10\/14\/ched-evans-found-not-guilty-of-rape-during-retrial-6192278\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rape trial of footballer Ched\u00a0Evans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The abuse I got was awful,\u2019 she says. \u2018Misogynistic abuse on <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/social-media\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a> has been going on for a really, really long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s now turbocharged with this ability to lift any woman\u2019s image, manipulate it through AI, and then use it to demean, degrade, humiliate and create death threats.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SEI_300943411-1791.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28733298\" alt=\"LONDON, ENGLAND - JANUARY 12: In this photo illustration, a screen displays a post by Elon Musk on the X app, showing an AI prompt-created image, made with Xai's Grok app, depicting Musk wearing a bikini, on January 12, 2026 in London, England. Photo Illustration of Grok Mobile App - 12 Feb 2025\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tGrok is X\u2019s chatbot feature, and has proven controversial (Picture: David Talukdar\/Shutterstock)<\/p>\n<p>Phoney images of real people, mainly women wearing bikinis or in sexually provocative situations, flooded X in December and January.<\/p>\n<p>Research published on Friday from <a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.malwarebytes.com%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cjosh.milton%40metro.co.uk%7C8749204623504cee923308dec79aaefb%7C0f3a4c644dc54a768d4152d85ca158a5%7C0%7C0%7C639167664722196396%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=tcEO2vWXss0wcFz7ulw7NfruMNYxFP4CMVymCnBDxE4%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Malwarebytes<\/a> reveals that one in three daily AI users think it\u2019s okay to create fake explicit images of people they know.<\/p>\n<p>But women previously told <strong><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/01\/02\/trolls-asked-elon-musks-grok-undress-make-look-pregnant-did-25952271\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Metro<\/a><\/strong> that the realistic AI-generated images, called <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/deepfake\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deepfakes<\/a>, amounted to digital sexual assault.<\/p>\n<p>One estimate puts the number of sexualised images created of real people between December 29 and January 8 at three million, or 190 per minute, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/counterhate.com\/research\/grok-floods-x-with-sexualized-images\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Countering Digital Hate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Asato\u2019s mentions were flooded with such content after she called on Musk to take action. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Somebody created this horrible AI video of me being chloroformed and my skirts being lifted as if for a sexual assault,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Since I posted last I\u2019ve had my image manipulated to portray me publicly in a bikini.<\/p>\n<p>Where have I consented to this? The issue of consent is missing from this debate.<\/p>\n<p>Sexualising someone\u2019s image without consent is digital sexual abuse and needs to stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jess Asato MP (@Jess4Lowestoft) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Jess4Lowestoft\/status\/2010275321828819426?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">January 11, 2026<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given that she has campaigned against <a href=\"https:\/\/labourlist.org\/2025\/07\/comment-labour-nudification-assault-ban\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nudification apps<\/a>, which create doctored explicit images, none of this is a surprise to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I became the victim of the very thing I was talking against,\u2019 she says, alleging that X gave her no real ways to protect herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This isn\u2019t just because of the nature of the content that\u2019s created \u2013 albeit it is pretty traumatising \u2013 it\u2019s to do with the fact that you, your personality, your image, has been taken without your consent, manipulated by somebody you don\u2019t know into something that looks realistic but is not you. That\u2019s where the violation happens.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Nobody would be allowed to come up to me in the street and strip my clothes off and put me in a bikini, so they shouldn\u2019t be allowed to do that online either.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Investigating xAI<\/p>\n<p><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/01\/12\/ofcom-launches-investigation-x-grok-undresses-thousands-women-26240434\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Media regulator Ofcom<\/a> and the Information Commissioner\u2019s Office, the data watchdog, both launched investigations into xAI.<\/p>\n<p>The government even considered blocking X, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/01\/13\/two-countries-banned-grok-ai-far-uk-26262202\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as some countries did<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>X removed illegal content depicting <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/children\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">children<\/a> and suspended accounts before restricting the image-generation tool to just paying subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong><a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/01\/15\/grok-ai-still-creating-sickening-images-real-people-despite-saying-wouldnt-26306162\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Metro <\/a><\/strong>found that Grok could still make partially nude images by using certain words. It also doctored illicit images of men on its <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/01\/16\/x-allowing-users-post-sexualised-images-men-easy-workaround-26324211\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">standalone app and website<\/a>, Grok Imagine. <\/p>\n<p>It has since become <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/01\/13\/creating-sexual-images-without-consent-become-crime-grok-ai-controversy-26259770\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">illegal to request or create a non-consensual deepfake image<\/a> of an adult in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>In posts seen by <strong>Metro <\/strong>this week, the bot will <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/grok\/status\/2064654790261452904\" rel=\"nofollow\">now tell non-paying users asking for bikini images <\/a>that \u2018Ask Grok\u2019 is only for subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>When premium members request them, the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/itshanasaito\/status\/2064465944064249998\" rel=\"nofollow\">bot doesn\u2019t seem to respond<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metro <\/strong>also saw examples last month of Grok replying to users as if it had generated an image of a person in a bikini, but without posting the image.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here you go! \ud83d\udd25 Same fire pose, now in a bikini. What next?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Grok (@grok) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/grok\/status\/2060506329232359489?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">May 29, 2026<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Things would have been different, Alsato argues, if Grok had launched with safeguards or followed policies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/online-safety\/illegal-and-harmful-content\/ofcom-tech-firms-must-up-their-game-to-tackle-online-harms-against-women-and-girls\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outlined by regulators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securityhero.io\/state-of-deepfakes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Security Hero <\/a>found that even before Grok was released,\u00a099% of\u00a0nude\u00a0deepfakes were of\u00a0women or girls.<\/p>\n<p>New claimants have come forward to join Asato\u2019s legal action, many saying they have struggled to persuade X to remove the offending images.<\/p>\n<p>X has never been held accountable over the Grok saga, Veronica Oakeshott, head of external affairs at the charity Women\u2019s Aid, tells <strong>Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018More must be done to control the use of this, and similar technologies to ensure\u00a0that\u00a0women and children are kept safe,\u00a0online\u00a0and offline,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n<p>When previously asked by <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/i\/grok?conversation=2064968406952976791\" rel=\"nofollow\">Metro<\/a>, Grok said it does not \u2018assist\u2019 with requests involving real, identifiable people.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/SEI_300943432-e20c.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-28733302\" alt=\"LONDON, ENGLAND - JANUARY 12: In this photo illustration, the prompt screen from the Grok AI app is displayed on an ipad, on January 12, 2026 in London, England. Court claim is being brought under the Data Protection Act and for tortious misuse of private information.<\/p>\n<p>Goshawk, director of business development at the domestic abuse and sexual violence charity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solacewomensaid.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Solace<\/a>, says it should mark a change in our approach to online safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Removing the tools alone does\u00a0not get to the heart of this issue, which is that our society values women\u2019s privacy and dignity less,\u2019 Goshawk says.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, Asato says she\u2019s not asking for much \u2013 no woman is.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s making sure that women are free to be ourselves in online spaces without the fear,\u2019 she adds, \u2018of being turned
