Diamond Necklace joined a group of elite fillies when she delivered Aidan O\u2019Brien\u2019s seventh major European Classic success of 2026 in the French Oaks yesterday.<\/p>\n

She took her unbeaten record to five at Chantilly but had to work harder than her 1-2 odds suggested to hold off outsider Pink Panthera by a short neck with Inis Mor, trained by David Menuisier, finishing third.<\/p>\n

The daughter of St Mark\u2019s Basilica joined the great Zarkava by completing the Prix Marcel Boussac-Poule d\u2019Essai des Pouliches-Prix de Diane hat-trick. She also came within 0.01 seconds of the race record time, set by another great Treve in 2013.<\/p>\n

Both Treve and Zarkava went on to capture the Prix de l\u2019Arc de Triomphe though O\u2019Brien appeared uncertain about the limit of her stamina after her first race beyond 1m.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is by St Mark\u2019s Basilica and is the very same as her Dad, a medium size horse, like he was, who quickens very well,\u201d he said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t go further than a mile and a quarter with him. Maybe this filly will never have to go that far.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt home in her work when she gets there, she doesn’t do too much. She does quicken very well and she is very classy. We know that she handles soft ground as well so the sky is the limit for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jockey Ryan Moore, awarded an MBE in the King\u2019s Birthday Honours, was winning the race for the first time, giving him a complete set of European Classics.<\/p>\n

Moore insisted he was always confident his filly would hold off the attentions of the strong-finishing Pink Panthera once he got Diamond Necklace to the front at the furlong marker.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought we were going to get beat. I think she does what she really needs to do. She is very straightforward and was very professional in everything she has done through the race,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the moment we don\u2019t know what she can\u2019t do as she\u2019s answered every question she has ever been asked. She is so straightforward, a great mover and she has handled bad ground in the Guineas and good ground today.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was very comfortable on it and she might stay further I suppose. But she has pace.\u201d<\/p>\n
