In the UK, pension contributions and investment returns are generally tax-free, but withdrawals are taxed later.

That also needs to be weighed up against the fact there is a limited four-year window after becoming a New Zealand tax resident where transfers can potentially be made without being subject to taxation.

“If you transferred it in year five, you would have to pay tax on a little bit of it, and it increases every year,” Rees-Williams says.

If you do decide to transfer your funds, the process can be painfully slow.

“The longest one we’ve dealt with is five years,” he says.

UK pensions must be transferred into a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension fund, or QROP, so funds can’t be withdrawn for a first home or financial hardship.

Whatever you decide to do, Rees-Williams says the worst mistake is simply forgetting the money exists.

Watch or listen to the full episode of The Prosperity Project for more.

The Prosperity Project is hosted by Nadine Higgins, an experienced broadcaster and financial adviser.

Follow the show at iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
