Keeping up with bin regulations<\/a> can feel like a full-time job. Rules on what can go where \u2013 and when it\u2019s collected \u2013 seem to change from one area to the next, and even small updates can catch people out.<\/p>\n

One week you\u2019re told to separate everything, the next there\u2019s a new list of items that can\u2019t go in recycling \u2013 and suddenly you\u2019re left second-guessing every bottle, box or bit of food waste. With councils tightening contamination rules and introducing new schemes, it\u2019s no wonder so many households say it\u2019s hard to stay on top of what\u2019s expected.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, though, there are refuse collectors out there who are happy to clear things up. One of them is Ashley, also known as the No1 Binman, spoke about a common mistake people make with their rubbish.<\/p>\n

In an eye-opening TikTok<\/a> video, the self-described ‘binflunecer’ said he’s often blamed for the error that is actually the residents’ fault.<\/p>\n

“When Karen screams at you for missing her bin<\/a>… but she put out the wrong bin,” he wrote in the caption.<\/p>\n

So there you have it: the error is that many residents put out the wrong bin and then wonder why it hasn’t been collected. While it may seem obvious, it’s a very easy mistake.<\/p>\n

In the comments section, people were pretty baffled that so many people get it wrong.<\/p>\n

One questioned: “How can you get it wrong? Every street has one of those neighbours who’s memorised the bin calendar, you always follow their lead!”<\/p>\n

However, others said they’d almost made the same error before. A second commenter said: “I never remember what bin it is. I wait for my neighbours to put theirs out so I know.”<\/p>\n

While a third had a word of warning for all the ‘Karens’: “Be nice to the binmen and they are nice to you, not hard.”<\/p>\n

More tips to ensure your rubbish gets collected<\/p>\n

1. Check your collection day and week <\/strong>\u2013 Some areas alternate (e.g., recycling one week, rubbish the next). Use your council\u2019s online calendar\/app.<\/p>\n

2. Put the bin out on time <\/strong>\u2013 If your council says \u201cby 7am\u201d, aim for the night before (without blocking the pavement).<\/p>\n

3. Put it in the right place <\/strong>\u2013 Usually at the kerb edge\/property boundary, with the lid facing the road if your council requests it.<\/p>\n

4. Make sure the lid fully closes \u2013 <\/strong>Overfilled bins are often tagged and left. Don\u2019t wedge lids open.<\/p>\n

5. Bag general waste properly <\/strong>\u2013 Loose waste can spill when lifted, but tied bin bags help prevent mess and refusals.<\/p>\n

6. Don\u2019t contaminate recycling<\/strong> \u2013 Keep wrong items out (common issues: plastic film, black bags, nappies\/food in recycling). Quick rinse containers if needed.<\/p>\n

7. Keep food waste to the right container <\/strong>\u2013 If you have a food caddy, use it. Don\u2019t put food waste in recycling, and use the liner type your council accepts.<\/p>\n

8. <\/strong>Keep bins accessible \u2013 <\/strong>Don\u2019t park cars in front of them, and avoid placing bins behind walls, poles, or on steps where crews can\u2019t safely pull them.<\/p>\n

9.
