Knowing just how important self-care and exercise is will not only help you feel your absolute best, but it can also help you remain active and independent. The fact that <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/morning-exercises-restore-muscle-loss-after-50\/\" target=\"_blank\">muscle loss<\/a> is a natural process as you age is a major motivating factor.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you are working\u00a0to\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/best-foods-fitter-body-after-50\/\" target=\"_blank\">achieve a fitter body<\/a> or need\u00a0help getting started, we\u2019re here with a helpful plan. We spoke with <b>Karen Ann Canham<\/b>, CEO and founder of<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.karenannwellness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Karen Ann Wellness<\/a>, Board-Certified Wellness Coach, and Nervous System Specialist, who has almost two decades of experience in the wellness space, who recommends five daily exercises to prioritize after 60.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get one thing straight: No workout can literally \u201creverse aging.\u201d However, certain moves can help you maintain qualities linked to healthy aging, including balance, strength, posture, mobility, and independence, Canham explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose these exercises because they mimic real-life movements that adults need every day. They train multiple muscle groups simultaneously and support the physical abilities most strongly associated with maintaining independence as we age,\u201d Canham tells us.<\/p>\n<p>\tSit-to-Stand<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit-to-stands (chair squats) strengthen the quadriceps and glutes while maintaining the ability to safely get up from a chair,\u201d Canham notes.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Begin seated at the front of a sturdy chair, feet under your knees.<\/li>\n<li>Lean forward just a bit.<\/li>\n<li>Try to stand up without using your knees, hands, or additional support.<\/li>\n<li>Use control to slowly sit back down.<\/li>\n<li>Perform 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"c-article__related-link\"><a class=\"related-link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatthis.com\/are-daily-planks-enough-to-get-abs\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Is Doing Planks Every Day Enough to Get Abs?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\tBrisk Walking<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lace up your sneakers and head outdoors\u2014or hit up the treadmill\u2014for an invigorating brisk walk. According to Canham, brisk walking helps support endurance, circulation, cardiovascular health, and metabolic function.
