{"id":1030319,"date":"2026-06-16T14:20:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T14:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1030319\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T14:20:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T14:20:19","slug":"mackintosh-design-brought-back-to-life-in-glasgow-central-station-mural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1030319\/","title":{"rendered":"Mackintosh design brought back to life in Glasgow Central Station mural"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The artwork, Drooko, pays homage to the work of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The mural pays homage to Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh\" loading=\"eager\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/0_Drooko-in-Central-Station-1jpeg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"The mural pays homage to Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">The mural pays homage to Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh(Image: Network Rail)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Commuters at Glasgow&#8217;s busiest station will be greeted by a new <a aria-label=\"ceramic muralLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/whats-on\/arts-culture-news\/\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">ceramic mural<\/a>, which pays homage to the work of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The artwork, Drooko, at <a aria-label=\"Glasgow Central StationLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/all-about\/glasgow-central-station-1\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Glasgow Central Station<\/a>, created by Make It Glasgow and commissioned by <a aria-label=\"Network RailLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/all-about\/network-rail\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Network Rail<\/a> Scotland, will now welcome passengers in the stairwell at the Argyle Street exit on the lower level of the station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The piece reimagines a rare 1890s advertising design by Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh and her sister Frances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The original survives only in fragmentary photographs held by The Hunterian at <a aria-label=\"Glasgow UniversityLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/all-about\/glasgow-university\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">Glasgow University<\/a>, and the new mural brings it back to life in colour using ceramic decals and handmade tiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a contemporary twist, the surrounding tiles are made using a &#8220;smog-glaze&#8221; &#8211; an art material created from dust collected at the <a aria-label=\"stationLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/all-about\/traffic-and-travel\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">station<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">With additional funding from the Railway Heritage Trust, the project has brought teams together from across Scotland&#8217;s railway, including Scotrail, The Hunterian Art Gallery and Museum, University of Glasgow, Glasgow City Archives, Mitchell Library, Alasdair Gray Archive, and The Glasgow School of Art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It also adds to the station&#8217;s artistic story, linking to existing works including the concourse mosaics by Jude Burkhauser and the legacy of the Glasgow Girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Catherine Ospedale, director of communications at Network Rail Scotland, said: \u201cThis is a fantastic example of what can happen when people come together with a shared vision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The mural not only celebrates Glasgow\u2019s artistic heritage but also shows how our stations can be places of creativity and community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Yvonne Blair, programme controls manager at Network Rail Scotland, said: \u201cIt\u2019s been incredibly rewarding to help bring this project to life, working with such a talented group of partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The mural reflects both the rich heritage of Glasgow Central and the collaborative spirit of the railway today, creating something that passengers can enjoy for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Louise Nolan, co-director of Make It Glasgow, said: \u201cIt\u2019s been a privilege to reimagine Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh\u2019s work and bring it into such a busy public space. Using smog from the station in the tiles connects the past and present in a direct, human way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Paul McKay, Scotrail communications director, said: <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"\/>\u201cIt\u2019s great to see this new mural on the Glasgow Central Low Level stairwell where thousands of people will be able to appreciate it every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe artwork gives this part of the station a creative boost, and Scotrail is proud to be a part of this reimagining of the city\u2019s cultural heritage with its links to the famous Glasgow Girls.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The artwork, Drooko, pays homage to the work of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh.
