It was the first time sonar and audio equipment successfully combined with surface and underwater cameras to monitor marine mammals in real time using AI detection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The sounds and images were gathered by the Marinus monitoring platform deployed by the Morlais project northwest of Anglesey\u2019s Holy Island. The information it collected will be used to safeguard marine wildlife as Europe\u2019s largest consented tidal energy development progresses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This week the Marinus buoy was stood down and towed back to <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/all-about\/holyhead\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">Holyhead<\/a> after three years at sea. As well as tracking fish, dolphins and porpoises in the area, the unmanned platform has also been monitoring seabirds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In July 2024, guillemots were fitted with <a aria-label=\"miniature solar-powered transmittersLink opens in a new tab.\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/news\/north-wales-news\/solar-powered-birds-paving-way-29640183\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\">miniature solar-powered transmitters<\/a> on their legs. It followed concerns the Morlais scheme would devastate guillemots and razorbills at South Stack cliffs near Holyhead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The work was carried out as part of the Marine Characterisation Research Project (MCRP) led by North Wales social enterprise, Menter M\u00f4n. As it followed a seven-month period of monitoring, Menter M\u00f4n Morlais said it \u201cconfirmed initial assessments that dolphins are relatively infrequent in this area\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Scheme organisers said the work demonstrated that wildlife can be monitored effectively without disrupting their habitats and behaviour. She added: \u201cThe data we have gathered will help ensure that tidal energy devices within the Morlais zone can be deployed safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cFrom sonar and acoustic sensors to video and AI-driven monitoring, we have used technology not trialled elsewhere \u2013 and all as part of our commitment to protecting local marine wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re now focused on the next phase and hope the tools and methodologies used at our site can be adapted for wider use, including in offshore wind and other industries looking to understand and reduce their impact on marine wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Footage captured by Marinus was used to refine the system\u2019s AI detection technology. Menter M\u00f4n said the monitoring results will feed into discussions about the future of marine project consenting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Working with a team of experts, Morlais is now developing a detailed Environmental Monitoring and Mitigation Plan (EMMP) to safeguard local marine <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/all-about\/wildlife-and-nature\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">wildlife<\/a> as the scheme progresses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In February, Morlais was awarded a further 18.5 MW capacity in the UK Government\u2019s latest Contracts for Difference allocation.
