{"id":1031420,"date":"2026-06-17T02:15:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T02:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1031420\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T02:15:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T02:15:17","slug":"qualcomms-new-chip-pushes-us-deeper-into-the-ar-glasses-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1031420\/","title":{"rendered":"Qualcomm\u2019s New Chip Pushes Us Deeper Into the AR Glasses Era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The \u201cfacial computing\u201d era is slowly becoming less of a trendy gadget <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/metas-ray-bans-arent-the-only-smart-glasses-with-a-glasshole-problem-2000770193\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for \u201cglassholes.\u201d<\/a> Qualcomm is promising to power the next slate of camera-filled XR headsets and AR glasses with the Snapdragon Reality Elite, a new chip designed, of course, to put AI right in front of your eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/everyone-wants-a-piece-of-xreals-ar-glasses-2000765921\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enough AR glasses available now<\/a> that we have to make a distinction between \u201coptical see-through\u201d\u2014aka just a freaking pair of glasses\u2014and \u201cvideo see-through,\u201d which refers to the video passthrough you get through devices like the <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/samsungs-galaxy-xr-is-the-future-of-wearables-just-not-vr-headsets-2000757782\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung Galaxy XR<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/apple-vision-pro-m5-review-the-crown-of-the-dorks-2000675079\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple Vision Pro<\/a>. Qualcomm built the Snapdragon Reality Elite chip to power both use cases, though a pair of \u201cextended reality\u201d glasses will naturally have to rely on external devices to power all that \u201caugmented reality\u201d goodness.<\/p>\n<p>Snapdragon Reality Elite is technically a sequel to the chipmaker\u2019s previous Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 found inside devices like the aforementioned Galaxy XR. This time around, Qualcomm promises a significant 60% boost in Adreno GPU performance and a 30% uptick in Kyro CPU capabilities. In addition, the new chip supports 4.4K resolution, per eye, and a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz. Alongside the improved performance, Qualcomm claims we\u2019ll see 20% better battery life than we got from its past-gen chip.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2000772512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/us_ggl_android_xr_xreal_aura_shoot_V3.jpg\" alt=\"Us Ggl Android Xr Xreal Aura Shoot V3\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\"  \/>That compute puck\u2014powered by Snapdragon Reality Elite\u2014is what makes the Project Aura glasses sing. \u00a9 Xreal <\/p>\n<p>The chip also supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing and promises a 10% reduction in photon-to-photon latency\u2014in other words, the time it takes for an image to beam itself to the displays in front of users\u2019 eyes. The chip supports up to 12 on-device cameras,\u00a0which are necessary for larger XR headsets, though a pair of glasses will use far fewer sensors (and two cameras\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/meta-is-testing-police-surveillance-tech-for-its-smart-glasses-2000771931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">may already be <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/meta-is-testing-police-surveillance-tech-for-its-smart-glasses-2000771931\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two too many<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not likely to see a direct sequel to Galaxy XR anytime soon. Instead, we\u2019ll have to see for ourselves if these improvements make any meaningful difference in Xreal and Google\u2019s Project Aura AR glasses. Those XR spectacles are already up for preorder despite lacking an exact launch price. VR headset maker Play for Dream is also working on a Snapdragon Reality Elite device, though the company has offered no details on what that device may entail.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2000772511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/assets_2026_06_1781197564_Snapdragon-Reality-Elite-Platform-Overview-Embargoed-until-June-16-at-10-a.jpeg\" alt=\"Assets 2026 06 1781197564 Snapdragon Reality Elite Platform Overview Embargoed Until June 16 At 10 Am Pt.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\"  \/>\u00a9 Qualcomm <\/p>\n<p>Software bugs aside, Samsung\u2019s headset was already pretty fast at loading AR content, so a beefier chip could expand the possibilities for what we could put in front of our eyes. More than that, Qualcomm wants you to believe that these chips are purpose-built to run AI. Snapdragon Reality Elite supports up to 48 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) of total on-device AI performance, which is enough for very low-end AI models. Otherwise, any kind of agentic assistant will need to rely on cloud computing. That\u2019s a major reason why the Reality Elite supports the latest connectivity standards, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.<\/p>\n<p>The Snapdragon Reality Elite won\u2019t necessarily scale with the hardware\u2019s size, of course. Instead, devices like Project Aura will <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/metas-smart-glasses-are-long-ways-from-their-eureka-moment-2000767574\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rely on tethered compute pucks<\/a> to produce what is transmitted to the displays behind each lens.
