That\u2019s thanks to Vermont-based independent bottler Lost Lantern, who are taking on a mammoth project to celebrate the United States\u2019 semi-quincentennial marking 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was first published. They\u2019re blending together bourbons from all 50 US states into a single, first-ever collection. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lostlanternwhiskey.com\/products\/current-releases\/#blend-series\">Lost Lantern\u2019s United States of Bourbon project<\/a> is a massive undertaking, that has taken several years to pull together, but the final result is as a snapshot of America\u2019s whiskey industry, from Alaska to Hawaii, and New York to California. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Co-founders Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski first floated the idea back in 2021, and have spent the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lostlanternwhiskey.com\/how-we-choose-our-distillery-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">last several years personally vetting distilleries across the United States<\/a>, in search of the perfect blend of bourbons. It was an exhaustive process: <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe taste until we\u2019re absolutely confident and in agreement that our selection represents the very best of what American whiskey can offer,\u201d they said. \u201cBoth of us have to emphatically agree to every cask. That means you\u2019re getting a complex mix of flavours from across the continent, with whiskies distilled in salty coastal air blending with rich, grain-to-glass drops from the Great Plains, and a bourbon distilled in Alaska\u2019s pure Arctic waters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/manofmany.com\/culture\/drinks\/how-to-taste-whisky\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We taste all whiskies semi-blind<\/a>: we know what distillery a sample came from, but not which cask is which (usually the mix will include a range of age statements, finishes, and styles). We start with a few screening flights to narrow down our choices, then taste the finalists over and over again, in different orders and at different times of the day.
