He emphasized the tech should serve the needs of humans.<\/p>\n<p>Wang was speaking at the release of China&#8217;s global governance whitepaper, which criticized trade wars and emphasized support for the Global South. The category loosely refers to less developed economies, especially countries outside the U.S. and European orbits.<\/p>\n<p>Wang&#8217;s comments came as the U.S. ramps up efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/15\/anthropic-mythos-trump-ai.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restrict foreign access<\/a> to leading, U.S.-developed AI models. <\/p>\n<p>During a summit in France this week, the wealthy Group of Seven countries \u2014 the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Canada, Italy and Japan \u2014\u00a0discussed a plan to give &#8220;trusted partners&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/g7-leaders-discuss-trusted-partners-access-cutting-edge-us-ai-models-sources-say-2026-06-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">access to the U.S. AI models<\/a>, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing three diplomatic sources. CNBC was unable to independently confirm the report and has reached out to the White House for comment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/108322778-17816395131781639507-46586605754-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Department of Defense Under Secretary: Evident by Anthropic's actions it was a 'supply chain risk'\"\/><\/p>\n<p>U.S. AI models also tend to be subscription-only, while China&#8217;s efforts have focused on cheap or free AI models that can often be downloaded in their entirety. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking alongside Wang on Wednesday, Zhao Haibing, vice chair of China&#8217;s top economic agency, pushed back on &#8220;closed, exclusive and monopolistic approaches to tech development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Zhao emphasized China&#8217;s efforts to deepen international AI cooperation through BRICs and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, an annual gathering of countries including Russia and Iran that was initially focused on security.<\/p>\n<p>Zhao also pointed to China&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.cn\/eng\/wjbzhd\/202409\/t20240927_11498465.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AI Capacity Building for All<\/a>&#8221; initiative, support for the United Nations in leading global AI governance and efforts to help developing countries with tech and talent.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/eng\/xw\/fyrbt\/lxjzh\/202605\/t20260519_11913636.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">China separately said<\/a> last month the two sides would work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/14\/us-china-ai-rules-bessent-us-lead.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI guardrails<\/a>, but few details have emerged.  <\/p>\n<p>Beijing has made sweeping proposals for global cooperation over the last 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/01\/sco-summit-xi-ai-cooperation-reject-cold-war-mentality-putin-modi-china-india-russia.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Global Governance Initiative<\/a>&#8221; at a China-hosted meeting of the SCO late last summer. <\/p>\n<p>A few weeks prior, at an annual AI conference in Shanghai, Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced the Chinese government had proposed the establishment of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/26\/china-ai-action-plan.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global AI cooperation organization<\/a>.
