Flash floods have hit the southern city of Jaen, Spain, following torrential downpours – with pedestrians knocked to the ground, cars submerged and roads turned to rivers<\/p>\n

Spain: People swept down streets as flash flooding hits Jaen<\/p>\n

Roads have been turned into rivers after a massive storm hit a Spanish holiday hotspot<\/a>, leaving cars submerged as footage showed pedestrians being knocked over and washed down streets.<\/p>\n

Drivers <\/a>found themselves being overtaken by wheelie bins floating in raging torrents of water as downpours <\/a>hit the southern city of Jaen last night. Locals and holidaymakers were then struck by a freak hailstorm.<\/p>\n

Footage showed people shouting for help as the cascading water knocked them off their feet and prevented them from getting back up.<\/p>\n

Council officials put the city in a “pre-emergency” phase to indicate an impending risk of severe storms and heavy flooding. Authorities worked through the night to try to restore calm following the chaos.<\/p>\n

The storm, which struck at 8pm and lasted only around 20 minutes, sparked major disruption across the city and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n

Police and fire crews received 110 calls about flooding in garages and basements while several streets faced power cuts.<\/p>\n

Around 30 litres of rain fell in just 20 minutes according to local weather<\/a> chiefs. One man was pictured being carried down a city street past a parked car with its windscreen wipers at full speed.<\/p>\n

The ferocious storm lifted up paving stones and left caf\u00e9 and bar terraces, where people had been enjoying the sunshine yesterday, submerged.<\/p>\n

This morning it was confirmed that no-one had been hurt despite the dramatic scenes. One local caught up in the storm said last night: “What I’ve just experienced was incredible.”<\/p>\n

Another, Maria del Mar Sanchez, said: “I’ve never seen anything like this in my f**king lifetime. Amazing.”<\/p>\n
