{"id":1032969,"date":"2026-06-17T19:02:44","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T19:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1032969\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T19:02:44","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T19:02:44","slug":"heatherwick-and-spparcs-olympia-redesign-phase-1-opens-to-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1032969\/","title":{"rendered":"Heatherwick and SPPARC\u2019s Olympia redesign Phase 1 opens to public"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first elements of the \u00a31.3 billion project include rooftop level bars and restaurants under a distinctive facetted glazed canopy and a 3,800-capacity live music and entertainment venue.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-829215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Olympia-Way-and-Canopy-entrance.-Courtesy-of-Olympia-in-partnership-with-Heatherwick-Studio.-Photogr.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2530\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The \u00a31.3 billion transformation of the 5.6ha, 140-year old exhibition centre in Hammersmith \u2013 originally built as the National Agricultural Hall in 1886 to the designs of architect Henry Edward Coe \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/heatherwick-studio-and-spparc-win-go-ahead-for-1bn-olympia-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">received planning consent in January 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Accessed via a new public staircase flanked by escalators, restaurants, bars and a food hall are now open to the public at roof level. These sit under a glazed curved and facetted canopy composed of 520 glass panels, which is supported on five steel arches and picks up on the shape of the barrel-vaulted roofs of the existing exhibitions halls to either side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-829223\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/The-Canopy-Courtesy-of-Olympia-April-26-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2207\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Canopy<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline_image_source\" style=\"font-size:12px; max-width: 2570px;\">Source: Olympia<\/p>\n<p>In addition a 3,800-capacity live music and entertainment venue, dubbed British Airways ARC and designed by Haworth Tompkins, has also opened, which will be operated by AEG Presents.<\/p>\n<p>Further phases will see the opening of two hotels this summer \u2013 the 204-room Hyatt Regency London Olympia and 146-room citizenM London Olympia; a 5,100m2 office building later this year and the 1,575-capacity British Airways Theatre in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The latter \u2013 also designed by Haworth Tompkins \u2013 operated by London-based Trafalgar Entertainment and Broadway\u2019s The Shubert Organization, will be London\u2019s largest permanent new theatre in 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>This is all in addition to the Olympia\u2019s continued role as a major exhibition venue, with its two historic exhibition halls: the Grand Hall and the National Hall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-829211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Canopy.-Courtesy-of-Olympia-in-partnership-with-Heatherwick-Studio-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Across the development, the design incorporates approximately 1ha of public space, including Olympia Way, a 250m-long pedestrianised street, and Emberton Walk, an internal public street, which will incorporate a 83m-long, 8m-wide screen, which will be programmed with digital art and live content.<\/p>\n<p>Once fully open, the development is projected to attract an annual footfall of 10 million.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-829498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Wolves-of-Tokyo-Sunlight-Courtesy-of-Incipio.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1387\" height=\"1076\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wolves of Tokyo restaurant<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline_image_source\" style=\"font-size:12px; max-width: 1397px;\">Source: Incipio<\/p>\n<p>Architect\u2019s view<\/p>\n<p>What was once a 1km-long perimeter of lifeless inward-facing buildings is now a place where culture, creativity and the city\u2019s energy overlap.
