What are they achieving? \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EU leaders will be sick of the sight of each other by Friday (19 June), when five days of\u00a0non-stop summitry\u00a0ends after a\u00a0two-day\u00a0European Council meeting in Brussels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the France-hosted G7 leaders\u2019 meeting in\u00a0Evian-les-Bains was useful preparation for the EU-27. <\/p>\n<p>The wars in Iran and Ukraine were at the top of the G7 agenda. \u00a0So, too, was\u00a0the West\u2019s looming trade dispute with China and how to address Beijing\u2019s dominant position in controlling access to the critical minerals and rare earths which Europe needs for its industrial transition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/222436\/eu-leaders-to-pick-from-menu-of-anti-china-trade-measures-over-summit-dinner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/7ac070ac811e2e8c3a3bb0d0df46a166-600x400.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For French president Emmanuel Macron, the three-day gathering close to the Swiss border was a diplomatic success.\u00a0For one thing, president Donald Trump stayed until the summit\u2019s close on Wednesday and did not pick any fights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That was partly because\u00a0Paris had stripped out\u00a0climate\u00a0policy from the agenda, and abandoned plans to\u00a0agree\u00a0a\u00a0final communique.
