An Andy Burnham premiership is unlikely to make \u201csignificant\u201d savings to the ballooning welfare bill<\/a>, economists have warned.<\/p>\n

In the run-up today\u2019s by-election, the Mayor of Greater Manchester has said he wants to reduce social security spending by rethinking education and supporting young people, rather than \u201ccrude cuts\u201d.<\/p>\n

But economists have argued that \u201ctinkering around the sides\u201d is unlikely to address surging welfare expenditure in the short term \u2013 which is predicted to hit \u00a3400bn by the end of the decade, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).<\/p>\n
