Lidl has opened the door of its very first pub, but there is very little discount to be had on the price of a pint of Guinness.<\/p>\n

Pints of stout at the Middle Ale bar, which opened on Thursday next to its store in Dundonald<\/a>, are priced at \u00a35.80, around the average for Belfast.<\/p>\n

While its own house beer, from the Rye River Brewing Company, will cost \u00a35.30, lagers such as Tennents and Heverlee will set punters back over \u00a36. <\/p>\n

The discount retail chain<\/a> decided to open the \u00a3500,000 bar after failing to obtain a standard off sales licence for the store. This was due to an objection from another off licence owner nearby. <\/p>\n

It was able to obtain the bar licence as two other pubs in the area closed in recent years. The company was then able to plan for the associated off licence.<\/p>\n

The company said it has \u201cprioritised\u2004\u200boffering\u2004\u200bown-brand products alongside\u2004\u200bbranded names to allow\u2004\u200bcustomers more choice\u2004\u200band value\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPricing has\u2004\u200bbeen\u2004\u200bset\u2004\u200bin\u2004\u200bline with market\u2004\u200bprices and\u2004\u200boffers customers a wide range of\u2004\u200boptions\u2004\u200bat varying\u2004\u200bprice points,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

However, the price of a pint of Guinness is only slightly less than the current average in the city, which is \u00a35.84, according to pinttracker.com. <\/p>\n

The company claimed that Tennents at \u00a36.05 a pint and\u2004\u200bHeverlee at \u200b\u00a36.35 are five pence cheaper than other\u2004\u200bpubs in the\u2004area. Branded draught OutCider costs \u00a36.25 per pint. <\/p>\n

A measure of Lidl \u200bbranded \u200bgin, Wild Burrow, will sell for \u00a33.85 and \u200bthe company\u2019s own Dundalgan whiskey for \u200b\u00a34.30 per \u200bmeasure. <\/p>\n

The 60-seater pub, with a back bar, stands adjacent to the existing Dundonald store but has a separate entrance. <\/p>\n

Gordon Devenney, of O\u2019Donnell O\u2019Neill, designed the bar, with the \u201cvibrant interiors paying homage to Lidl\u2019s brand personality\u201d, according to the company.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pub has been styled to celebrate the brand\u2019s primary colour scheme, bold shapes and local references to Dundonald\u2019s history, creating a welcoming new community space for local residents to enjoy,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n

Gordon Cruikshanks, Lidl\u2019s regional managing director, said the opening of the bar \u201cmarks an important milestone as we open our first ever public house\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to finally bring the Dundonald community access to our full range of high quality, premium beers, wines and spirits for the first time in more than two decades,\u201d Mr Cruikshanks said.<\/p>\n
