Performed up close and in the round at Utopia Theatre\u2019s Sheffield city centre home, just 50 tickets are available for each of 14 performances of The Swamp Dwellers.<\/p>\n

The cast is currently deep in rehearsal under Utopia\u2019s artistic director Mojisola Kareem. They are Jude Akuwudike as Makuri, Urielle Klein-Mekongo as Alu, Theo Ogundipe as Kadiye, Obi Maduegbuna as the\u00a0beggar, Mr Culture as the drummer and Joshua Roberts-Mensah\u00a0as\u00a0Igwezu.<\/p>\n

Kareem (Crown of Blood, Death and The King\u2019s Horseman) has thoughtfully resurrected Nigerian Nobel laureate writer and activist Wole Soyinka\u2019s early\u00a0play,\u00a0bringing it back to the UK stage for the first time in over half a century.<\/p>\n

She believes the 1958 work to be one of Soyinka\u2019s most \u201cquietly powerful plays\u201d, which \u201csits in the shadows\u201d of the better-known\u00a0Death and the King\u2019s Horseman\u00a0and\u00a0The Lion and the Jewel.<\/p>\n

The Swamp Dwellers\u00a0was last staged in the UK in 1975 at African Caribbean arts centre\u00a0Keskidee\u00a0<\/a>in Islington, north London.<\/p>\n
