{"id":103715,"date":"2025-05-15T14:22:15","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T14:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/103715\/"},"modified":"2025-05-15T14:22:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T14:22:15","slug":"france-hopes-for-immediate-unconditional-ceasefire-through-russia-ukraine-peace-talks-in-turkiye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/103715\/","title":{"rendered":"France hopes for &#8216;immediate,&#8217; &#8216;unconditional&#8217; ceasefire through Russia-Ukraine peace talks in T\u00fcrkiye"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ISTANBUL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>France hopes for an \u201cimmediate\u201d and \u201cunconditional\u201d ceasefire through Russia-Ukraine peace talks in T\u00fcrkiye, the French foreign minister said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(The) best we can hope for in these technical discussions is indeed a ceasefire, an immediate, unconditional ceasefire that would allow for proper peace negotiation,\u201d Jean-Noel Barrot said Thursday, speaking before the start of day two of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Antalya, T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n<p>On reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not plan to attend Istanbul peace talks, Barrot said there was an \u201cempty chair\u201d in front of Ukraine \u201cwaiting for\u201d Putin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia is willing to avoid the massive sanctions on oil, the financial sector that the US and that Europeans are preparing in the instance where Russia would keep refusing the ceasefire,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Barrot further warned that the upcoming talks should avoid \u201cthree traps\u201d that led previous discussions to fail: continuing talks amid active hostilities, forcing Ukraine to demilitarize without security guarantees, and lifting sanctions at the very beginning of negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe come with one single message to stand by Ukraine and to ensure that we get a just and lasting, enduring peace,\u201d UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy also spoke before the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy demonstrated his \u201creadiness\u201d for peace by coming to T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s hugely important that we recommit to Europe&#8217;s defenses and that we step up alongside our US partners in this challenging geopolitical moment where there are so many pressures across the world,\u201d Lammy added.<\/p>\n<p>Netherlands\u2019 Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp also said it was \u201cpretty clear\u201d that Ukraine was willing to go to Istanbul for peace talks, while Russia was not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, that makes (it) very clear where we need to put pressure to move towards peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Veldkamp further urged Europe to increase defense spending to strengthen their deterrence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess the entire world has realized that there&#8217;s only one party not willing to engage in serious peace negotiations, and that certainly is Russia,\u201d Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen further said.<\/p>\n<p>She also noted that T\u00fcrkiye \u201cgraciously\u201d offered the location for peace negotiations, expressing her \u201cexpectation\u201d toward an \u201cimmediate\u201d ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed his willingness to remain \u201coptimistic\u201d regarding the outcome of the peace talks in Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that he does not know whether Russia wants to achieve peace or not, urging for \u201cmore Russian engagement\u201d for a possible solution.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the cooperation between Italy and T\u00fcrkiye, Tajani noted that the relations between the two countries remain positive, expressing Italy\u2019s \u201creadiness\u201d to do more with T\u00fcrkiye in various sectors, including defense.<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide also underscored that a possible ceasefire should leave Ukraine as a \u201cfree, sovereign, and independent\u201d country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he (Putin) is not ready to deliver, there will be more pressure, more sanctions, and more consequences,\u201d Eide said, underlining that the matter is not only about Ukraine but also a \u201cmajor transatlantic issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also noted that Europe should do more and increase its defense spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we see, Putin&#8217;s strategy doesn&#8217;t change.
