Despite the World Cup being in full swing, we Leeds United<\/a> supporters already have one eye on the upcoming season.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Graham Smyth<\/a> recently revealed where are linked with a sensational move for Borussia Dortmund playmaker Julian Brandt on a free transfer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki is another name we have been linked with<\/a>. This makes a lot of sense considering the uncertain futures of Karl Darlow and Lucas Perri.<\/p>\n

However, regardless of who we sign, the Whites simply cannot afford to make the same mistake they did last season.<\/p>\n

Leeds United must ensure signings are up to speed ahead of Nottingham Forest clash<\/p>\n

Last summer, one of our most important signings, Dominic Calvert-Lewin<\/a>, arrived relatively late in the window.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for us, that meant the Englishman was unable to start any of our opening three Premier League games.<\/p>\n

Instead, we had to play Joel Piroe up top against Everton and Arsenal, where the 26-year-old was completley anonymous in both games.<\/p>\n

This is something United should aim to avoid at all costs again next season. Any signing who is brought in to radically improve the starting XI should be in through the door in time to start that opening game against Forest on the opening day.<\/p>\n

Naturally, with the World Cup ongoing, we are bound to make some late signings. But hopefully, as many as possible can be brought in, in time to hit the ground running straight away.<\/p>\n

Our opening five fixtures look relatively favourable<\/a>. None of the teams we face qualified for the Champions League last season. <\/p>\n

This makes it even more important that we take advantage of this and get off to a good start. <\/p>\n

Leeds United can afford to bring in certain signings later than others<\/p>\n

Say, for example, we do sign a Brandt or a Harry Wilson<\/a>, for example. They\u2019re the sort of players we need to be getting through the door as soon as possible, as they raise the ceiling of our squad. <\/p>\n

If either or both are signed, they would likely be some of the first names on Daniel Farke\u2019s<\/a> teamsheet. We simply need them from the get-go.<\/p>\n

However, if we signed a backup for Gabriel Gudmundsson, let\u2019s say, we could afford to be without him immediately. <\/p>\n

This is all in an ideal world. I\u2019m sure the 49ers will want to get the bulk of their business done early, but it\u2019s not always how things develop.<\/p>\n

Quite often, some of the best deals only emerge later on in the window, like the one for Calvert-Lewin last summer.<\/p>\n

So if we have to wait until near the deadline for one or two quality additions, that\u2019s fine. However, in an ideal world, the majority of our signings will be a part of the squad for our pre-season preparations.<\/p>\n
