{"id":10375,"date":"2025-04-11T09:07:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T09:07:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/10375\/"},"modified":"2025-04-11T09:07:22","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T09:07:22","slug":"france-suggests-targeting-big-techs-data-use-in-response-to-us-tariffs-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/10375\/","title":{"rendered":"France suggests targeting Big Tech\u2019s data use in response to US tariffs \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A French government spokesperson already <a href=\"https:\/\/video.lefigaro.fr\/figaro\/video\/droits-de-douane-les-services-numeriques-et-les-gafam-pourraient-etre-taxes-annonce-sophie-primas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> last week that the EU&#8217;s retaliation against U.S. tariffs could include \u201cdigital services that are currently not taxed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That suggestion was fiercely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/europe\/retaliating-against-us-digital-services-not-eu-position-ireland-says-2025-04-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejected<\/a> by Ireland, which hosts the European headquarters of several U.S. Big Tech firms.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-vows-to-retaliate-against-trumps-20-percent-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has vowed to respond<\/a> to Trump&#8217;s trade war. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/196684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> is seen as a possible area for Europe to retaliate. The European Union has a \u20ac157 billion trade surplus in goods, which means it exports more than it imports, but it runs a deficit of \u20ac109 billion in services, including digital services. <\/p>\n<p>Big Tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Meta dominate many parts of the market in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Lombard said on Friday that the trade war with Washington might prevent France from bringing down its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-risks-missing-deficit-target-because-donald-trump-trade-war-minister-eric-lombard-says\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-risks-missing-deficit-target-because-donald-trump-trade-war-minister-eric-lombard-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bloated budget deficit<\/a>. &#8220;Tax revenues would probably fall, and then GDP would fall compared to forecasts, which would worsen the deficit,&#8221; Lombard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cD2X9JZPNBM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in an interview with<\/a>\u00a0BFMTV\/RMC.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0French Prime Minister Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou said on Sunday that Trump\u2019s tariff onslaught will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/french-pm-accused-trump-of-interference-over-le-pen-remarks\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/french-pm-accused-trump-of-interference-over-le-pen-remarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut France\u2019s gross domestic product<\/a> by more than 0.5 percentage point. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe risk of job losses is absolutely major, as is that of an economic slowdown and a halt to investment.
