{"id":10383,"date":"2025-04-11T09:11:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T09:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/10383\/"},"modified":"2025-04-11T09:11:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T09:11:16","slug":"what-just-happened-%e2%80%95-and-whats-europes-gameplan-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/10383\/","title":{"rendered":"What just happened \u2015 and what\u2019s Europe\u2019s gameplan? \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One government figure, granted anonymity to speak about a sensitive area of policy, told POLITICO the key focus of negotiation, at least in the short term, will be the steep sectoral tariffs on steel and automobiles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is some optimism about Britain\u2019s prospects of getting a deal on the sectoral tariffs \u2014 but those hopes could easily be dashed given Trump\u2019s propensity to change his mind.<\/p>\n<p>Poor Germany didn&#8217;t even have a government!<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s on-again, off-again global trade war put great pressure on Germany\u2019s incoming conservative chancellor, Friedrich Merz, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/facing-huge-trump-tariff-hit-germany-new-government-bets-big-boosting-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rapidly form a government<\/a> capable of helping forge a European response.<\/p>\n<p>One of Merz\u2019s core election promises to voters was to revitalize Germany\u2019s struggling economy, which has contracted for two years in a row. But Trump\u2019s tariff threats pose a particular risk to Germany\u2019s export-oriented economy, potentially neutralizing many of Merz\u2019s economic initiatives even before he\u2019s had a chance to implement them.<\/p>\n<p>Merz now advocates a carrot-and-stick approach when it comes to Trump, supporting tough countermeasures on new tariffs while also pushing for a free-trade agreement with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are determined to fight back, and you can see from this example that [European] unity helps,\u201d Merz said in a German television interview.
