{"id":1040415,"date":"2026-06-21T07:31:21","date_gmt":"2026-06-21T07:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1040415\/"},"modified":"2026-06-21T07:31:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T07:31:21","slug":"edinburgh-to-london-rail-service-achieves-biggest-uk-passenger-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1040415\/","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh to London rail service achieves biggest UK passenger increase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Independent watchdog Transport Focus published a survey on Thursday which showed Lumo\u2019s passenger number were up 23 per cent on last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figures meant the rail operator had the biggest increase in passenger numbers across the entire UK rail industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lumo also serves passengers from London to Glasgow, as well as a new Stirling route.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" data-attachment-id=\"649477\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/2026\/06\/largest-increase-in-rail-passenger-numbers-in-the-uk-on-edinburgh-to-london-service\/1280px-lumo_803003_at_edinburgh_waverley\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1280px-Lumo_803003_at_Edinburgh_Waverley.jpg?fit=1280%2C960&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1280,960\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"1280px-Lumo_803003_at_Edinburgh_Waverley\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Lumo_803003_at_Edinburgh_Waverley.jpg&quot;&gt;MrBoyt&lt;\/a&gt;, &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0&quot;&gt;CC BY-SA 4.0&lt;\/a&gt;, via Wikimedia Commons&lt;\/p&gt;&#10;\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theedinburghreporter.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1280px-Lumo_803003_at_Edinburgh_Waverley.jpg?fit=696%2C522&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1280px-Lumo_803003_at_Edinburgh_Waverley.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-649477\"  \/><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Lumo_803003_at_Edinburgh_Waverley.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MrBoyt<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a>, via Wikimedia Commons<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey of more than 100,000 rail passengers awarded Lumo first place in the \u201cvalue for money\u201d category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport Focus said: \u201cLumo passengers were most satisfied with value for money (75 per cent).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lumo\u2019s sister firm, Hull Trains, was awarded the top spot in Transport Focus\u2019s survey, with 94 per cent of passengers satisfied with their journey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lumo took joint fourth place, with a 90 per cent satisfaction rating.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stuart Jones, Managing Director of First Rail Open Access, said: \u201cI\u2019m incredibly proud of our dedicated teams at both Hull Trains and Lumo for these impressive results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor Hull Trains to be ranked number one across the industry for customer satisfaction is an incredible achievement and a testament to the dedication of our entire team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSimilarly, for Lumo to be ranked number one for value for money, while also placed among the top three long-distance operators for overall satisfaction reflects of our commitment to making rail more accessible and affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The publication of the Transport Focus survey coincided with the latest rail passenger statistics from the Office of Rail and Road, the industry watchdog.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ORR reported a four per cent increase in passenger numbers on UK railways for the three months between January and March, compared with the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, Lumo launched a new service linking Stirling and London Euston via the West Coast Main Line, offering the first direct link to London for a number of stations along the route. Its first Stirling-Euston passenger numbers will be reported by the ORR in its next quarterly report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lumo\u2019s 23 per cent growth on the East Coast Main Line was almost eight times greater than the three per cent underlying increase in long-distance train travel, according to the ORR.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lumo and Hull Trains are both \u201copen access\u201d operators, meaning they are run without any taxpayer subsidy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alex Robertson, Chief Executive of Transport Focus, said: \u201cThese results show that it\u2019s possible for the railway to get it right, but that this isn\u2019t happening consistently enough.
