{"id":1040588,"date":"2026-06-21T09:33:23","date_gmt":"2026-06-21T09:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1040588\/"},"modified":"2026-06-21T09:33:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T09:33:23","slug":"after-the-fracture-how-britains-financial-industry-recovered-from-brexit-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1040588\/","title":{"rendered":"After the fracture: How Britain&#8217;s financial industry recovered from Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">[LONDON] In the build-up to 2016\u2019s Brexit referendum, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said that the US bank could shift 4,000 jobs from Britain, joining a chorus of executives who warned a vote to leave the EU would ravage the country\u2019s finance industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">A decade later, the Wall Street giant plans to build a tower in London\u2019s Canary Wharf that it says could house up to 12,000 employees \u2013 a commitment hailed as \u201c<a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/banking-finance\/jpmorgan-build-hq-london-its-biggest-europe-middle-east-and-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a multibillion-pound vote of confidence<\/a>\u201d by Finance Minister Rachel Reeves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Other signs, too, suggest the British financial industry has weathered Brexit better than many expected: Employment in the City of London financial district is near an all-time high, and banks are posting record profits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But interviews with executives and data reviewed by Reuters paint a more nuanced picture, of Britain as a financial centre whose dominance has been eroded while the country itself has become less attractive for some investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cBrexit undeniably weakened the City\u2019s position,\u201d said Michael Mainelli, who led the financial district as lord mayor in 2023 and 2024, citing relocation of jobs from London to cities such as Paris and Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cYet, Europe too is weaker. Both the EU and the UK have been losing out to the enormous growth in Asian financial markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">To keep serving clients across the 27-country EU, British firms that lost so-called passporting arrangements moved about 40,000 jobs to European financial hubs, according to estimates from the City of London Corporation, the municipal body for the \u201cSquare Mile\u201d, which speaks for the sector more broadly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Britain remains second only to the US as a destination for foreign capital, hosting more than \u00a312 trillion (S$20.5 trillion) in foreign direct investment, portfolio investment and cross-border deposits at the end of 2025, according to International Monetary Fund data cited by Barclays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Its share has declined, however, from 8.6 per cent in 2015 to 7 per cent in 2025. In the same period, the US\u2019 share of foreign capital has increased to 25 per cent from around 20 per cent, thanks mainly to demand for US stocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-6 border-b border-gray-250 pb-4 font-poppins text-4xs font-medium tracking-widest text-gray-515\">SEE ALSO<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"block h-full w-full\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/international\/uk-inflation-unexpectedly-holds-steady-2-8-may?ref=article-see-also\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"relative z-10 h-full w-full object-cover\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/5072512889a795b4567965bf519f87c86230fcf294d9f78b9f8e919aff796c45.webp\" alt=\"Price growth in the services sector \u2013 which is monitored for signs of domestic pressures \u2013 still climbed to 3.7 per cent, more than forecast.\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Since 2015, <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/international\/global\/brexit-10-years-uk-exporters-still-adjusting-life-outside-eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Britain has lost market share<\/a> in 10 out of 12 categories of international finance, including foreign-exchange trading, stock offerings and assets under management, research company New Financial found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThe impact of Brexit on the City has been like the UK breaking its own arm; it has not been fatal but nor has it been great, and there was a degree of self-injury,\u201d New Financial\u2019s founder William Wright said.<\/p>\n<p>Rising rates, deregulation helped underpin sector<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">This month, Dimon said that JPMorgan will extend its US$1.5 trillion Security and Resiliency Initiative to Britain, helping companies in critical industries raise money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">As well as a landmark new London headquarters, the bank is expanding its campus in Bournemouth on England\u2019s south coast at a cost of \u00a3300 million to \u00a3350 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Citigroup has likewise said it is investing \u00a31.1 billion in its UK operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Across town from Canary Wharf, the British capital\u2019s centuries-old financial heart appears thriving: According to the Corporation, there are 676,000 workers in the City of London, up more than 25 per cent since 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI did believe the City would have another life after Brexit, but I didn\u2019t know it would be so quick and so strong,\u201d said Soren Jessen, whose 1 Lombard Street restaurant faces the Bank of England (BOE). Sales are better than ever, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Britain formally left the EU on Jan 31, 2020, just weeks before Covid-19 lockdowns began. The pandemic and a string of tumultuous events since, including the Ukraine and Middle East wars and US President Donald Trump\u2019s upending of trade and security arrangements, make Brexit impacts hard to isolate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">While rival hubs have chipped away at London\u2019s market share, global and national developments have helped underpin the financial services sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">A post-Covid inflation spike prompted the BOE and other central banks to hike interest rates, turbocharging the returns to banks from lending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">After winning power in 2024, the Labour Party government accelerated deregulation, arguing that rules put in place after the global financial crisis had stifled growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Charged by Reeves with supporting the government\u2019s growth agenda, banks also swerved fresh taxes and won concessions from regulators on capital requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Britain\u2019s freedom to tweak the EU\u2019s Solvency II rules by cutting administrative costs and easing capital constraints such as the buffers insurers must keep against losses has meanwhile boosted the insurance sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">According to the London Market Group of insurers, gross written premiums have doubled in the last decade, to US$187 billion. London has become a centre for financial technology, too: <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/revolut-open-paris-office-lender-seeks-expand-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Digital bank Revolut<\/a> is now Europe\u2019s most \u200bvaluable fintech firm, valued at US$75 billion in a November share sale.<\/p>\n<p>A less attractive place to invest?<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The broader economy has struggled to grow, however, lagging the US, where consumer spending and a tech-sector boom have driven growth, and even the sluggish eurozone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Britain\u2019s long-run economic productivity will be 4 per cent lower after Brexit than if the country had stayed in the EU, with much of the damage done already, the government\u2019s budget forecasters have estimated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cYou can point to the day in June 2016 where the UK became, in reality, a less attractive place to invest,\u201d said Premier Miton chief investment officer Neil Birrell, who has significant UK holdings but has been reducing them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Britain\u2019s bond yields are now among the highest of major advanced economies, not helped by political instability that has seen six prime ministers in the decade since the Brexit vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Higher government borrowing costs in turn push up the price of credit for businesses and households. Lending to small businesses as a share of gross domestic product has fallen from just above 8 per cent in 2016 to 6.5 per cent in the year to date, BOE data shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">A recent Boston Consulting Group report identified \u201ca self-reinforcing credit trap\u201d where businesses do not seek credit because they expect to be rejected and lenders pull back because they see insufficient demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Reforms to <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/international\/uk-launches-sterling-20-club-drum-investment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">boost investment by domestic pension funds<\/a> in British growth stocks from just 0.1 per cent of their assets could help Britain prosper in the next decade, New Financial\u2019s Wright said, as could more participation by retail investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Brexit has increased administrative burdens such as customs paperwork for businesses and disrupted supply chains.
