Eight developments could see major progress this year as plans to revive Stockport<\/a> town centre and the borough continue to move forward.<\/p>\n

Over the next 14 years, Stockport Council<\/a> hopes that 8,000 new town centre homes will be built and help continue driving forward a regeneration seen in recent years.<\/a> While there have been rows over whether some areas get more funding than others<\/a>, the local authority\u2019s Liberal Democrat administration says Stockport is \u2018unstoppable\u2019.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, a partnership called the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC), which has helped drive the borough\u2019s \u2018gold rush\u2019, was expanded to cover the entire town centre and help deliver alongside new homes and businesses, a new secondary school and a modern health hub.<\/p>\n

Stockport Council leader Mark Roberts previously said: \u201cMomentum is only building, with others now looking to our model as a blueprint for what successful town centre regeneration can achieve.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the boundary covering the whole town centre, we can accelerate delivery of new homes, jobs and opportunities that benefit residents across the borough. We\u2019re incredibly proud of what\u2019s been achieved already, and even prouder that we\u2019re only just getting started.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marple Community Hub<\/strong><\/p>\n

This major project is far outside the area covered by the MDC in the borough but costing \u00a320m and funded by the UK Government and Sports England, it will \u2018bring together modern health, leisure and library facilities in the heart of Marple<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n

In recent weeks, the building\u2019s brickwork is now complete and scaffolding has been removed, cladding is now being installed, the swimming pool is \u2018taking shape with floor and wall tiling now underway\u2019.<\/p>\n

Over the next few weeks, there will be further work on the cladding and insulation, landscaping around the site, pool tiling and finishes, as well as ceiling installations. Improvements are also being made to Marple Memorial Park including a new pump track and agility trail as well as woodland paths, benches, and the relocation of a community frog.<\/p>\n

Stockport 8<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stockport 8 is described as \u2018one of the UK\u2019s largest town centre regeneration projects\u2019 taking an eight acre site and turning it into a 1,300 home neighbourhood in the town centre with new public spaces, commercial businesses, and better connected to the town centre. Next to the town\u2019s famous viaduct, the scheme is expected to \u2018play a key role in extending the town centre creating a vibrant well connected place to live.<\/p>\n

According to the website for the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, Stockport 8 is their largest to date. The \u00a3350m development is \u2018a cornerstone\u2019 of the town\u2019s \u00a32bn regeneration.<\/p>\n

The corporation said it will \u2018create a distinctive, sustainable neighbourhood shaped by the town\u2019s heritage and future ambitions, with high-quality homes set beneath the iconic viaduct, people-first streets and spaces designed to bring communities together\u2019. The building of the first phase of 435 homes is set to begin this year.<\/p>\n

Stopford Park<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stopford Park is a 442 home development taking the former Stockport College campus and turning it into \u2018a vibrant, mixed\u2011use neighbourhood\u2019. Near the corner of Greek Street and Wellington Road, the scheme \u2018combines new homes for rent and sale with enhanced public realm, including a landscaped Art Park featuring installations from local artists\u2019.<\/p>\n

The scheme will also see the restoration of the Grade II-listed former Arts College into \u2018a flexible co\u2011working space, creating a place where heritage, creativity and modern living come together\u2019.<\/p>\n

One building, the Torkington, is being converted into 122 homes for rent while the Lyme will become a new 16-storey building with 258 apartments. 62 new homes in Bosden are set to be completed in 2026.<\/p>\n

Hatters Yard<\/strong><\/p>\n

This \u00a341m development is being delivered by Stockport Council, Stockport MDC, and Homes England and aims to bring \u2018high-quality, affordable homes into the heart of Stockport\u2019. The scheme promises to deliver 148 apartments and \u2018blends distinctive architecture and sustainable features, including a green pedestrian connection to the River Mersey, helping to open up and reconnect this part of the town\u2019.<\/p>\n

A page on the MDC\u2019s website said: \u201cHatters Yard will create a new area to live in within Stockport town centre, formed of two adjacent apartment buildings. With enhanced public realm, creating pedestrianised access to the River Mersey, the development opens up new connections and brings life back to this part of Chestergate.<\/p>\n

\u201cPositioned alongside Weir Mill and close to the emerging Stockport 8 neighbourhood, it will help shape a vibrant place to live and spend time. Excellent access to the Interchange and town centre amenities ensures residents are well connected, supporting the area\u2019s transformation into a thriving, active community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victoria House<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u00a370m Fletcher Street development will \u2018transform the long-derelict former Victoria House site into a vibrant, inclusive neighbourhood\u2019 with 245 adaptable homes \u2013 including modern apartments and 12 townhouses<\/p>\n

Stockport MDC said it \u2018will create a welcoming environment where people of all ages and needs can thrive\u2019 and the project is led by Progressive Living in partnership with Picture This.<\/p>\n

The partnership said: \u201cSet across two buildings ranging from 8 to 20 storeys, Victoria House will deliver high-quality homes designed in line with Passivhaus low energy standards. The development reimagines a prominent site, turning a vacant, underused plot into a sustainable and well-connected place to live.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy bringing new homes, activity and footfall into this part of the town centre, it will help reconnect the area and support Stockport\u2019s wider ambitions for a thriving, walkable urban neighbourhood, where people can live comfortably, sustainably and close to everyday amenities.\u201d<\/p>\n

St Thomas\u2019 Gardens<\/strong><\/p>\n

This project is expected to turn \u2018the long-derelict Grade II-listed former hospital site\u2019 into an all-age residential community. The site had been vacant for more than 15 years.<\/p>\n

Bought by Stockport Council from Homes England, the scheme will bring together affordable homes with integrated health and care provision. This includes an 82-bed intermediate care facility and supported housing.<\/p>\n

The project is set to be finished in 2026. One of the first facilities of its kind in Greater Manchester, there will be 68 affordable homes built around it \u2018creating a genuinely mixed and inclusive neighbourhood\u2019.<\/p>\n

Weir Mill<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taking old cotton mills, developer Capital&Centric is planning to deliver 253 riverside homes and \u2018will become a stand-out destination beneath the iconic viaduct along the banks of the River Mersey\u2019.<\/p>\n

Alongside the new homes, Stockport MDC is promising \u2018greenery, courtyards, vibrant outdoor squares for events and live music, alongside a mix of creative independent bars, restaurants and coffee shops\u2019.<\/p>\n

A page on the MDC\u2019s website said: \u201cThe redevelopment of Weir Mill has unlocked one of Stockport\u2019s most historic industrial sites and reimagined it as a lively, character\u2011packed destination. The development consists of a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom homes within modern, new-build blocks and the restored mill, featuring exposed brick and vaulted arches.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe restored wheelhouse and mill structures also provide resident amenities including co\u2011working areas, a lounge, gym and rooftop spaces. The scheme breathes new life into one of Stockport\u2019s oldest mills while creating a destination that feels contemporary and distinctly local.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mersey Square<\/strong><\/p>\n

This project aims to transform the area between the Stockport Interchange and the Merseyway Shopping Centre. The plans aim to make the area \u2018a greener, safer and more people focused public space, with modern public realm, a play space in the Bear Pit, new planting, high-quality materials, and improved walking and cycling routes\u2019.<\/p>\n

Micheala Meikle, Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration and Housing, previously said: \u201cMersey Square sits at the heart of our town centre and acts as the gateway for so many people arriving from our award-winning interchange and these plans will turn it into a space that truly reflects the pride, ambition and creativity of our borough.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bear Pit is a landmark that means so much to our community, and this transformation will honour that heritage while creating a vibrant, modern space where people want to spend time.
