target=\"_blank\">solid week of summitry in France and Brussels<\/a> there is no immediate let up for EU Commission president\u00a0Ursula\u00a0von der Leyen\u00a0who\u00a0hosts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2026\/06\/17\/eu-moldova-summit-to-take-place-in-brussels-on-22-june\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an\u00a0EU-Moldova\u00a0summit\u00a0<\/a>on Monday (22 June)\u00a0as the two sides seek to keep the momentum of Chi\u0219in\u0103u\u2019s plans to join the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last week, EU officials opened formal negotiations with Moldovan counterparts on\u00a0accession, with a view to Moldova putting the EU\u2019s legal framework into their own national law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the European Council said that the meeting would \u201cassess Moldova\u2019s progress on reforms, in particular, on the rule of law and fundamental rights, and the fight against organised crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also on Monday,\u00a0EU lawmakers are hoping to secure an agreement on the proposed child sexual abuse directive\u00a0that is part of a broader push to guarantee child safety online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trade will also be on the agenda\u00a0next week. <\/p>\n<p>Trade\u00a0commissioner\u00a0Maro\u0161\u00a0\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d\u00a0is due to hold crunch talks with Chinese commerce minister Wang Wentao in the last week of June amid EU threats to impose new trade\u00a0defence\u00a0measures to curb Chinese imports.\u00a0At last week\u2019s EU summit, leaders requested the Commission\u00a0assess\u00a0the EU\u2019s trade defense tools and \u201ceventually\u201d\u00a0come up with\u00a0new instruments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/222436\/eu-leaders-to-pick-from-menu-of-anti-china-trade-measures-over-summit-dinner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
