How new type 1 diabetes drug welcomes \u2018new age of treatment\u2019<\/p>\n

A new drug which can delay the onset of type 1 diabetes for up to three years will be made available on the NHS, in what experts have called a \u201clandmark moment\u201d.<\/p>\n

Teplizumab could help 1,100 people in first year<\/p>\n

Teplizumab is a first-of-its-kind therapy, approved for children aged eight and over and adults who have type 1 diabetes in its early stage before symptoms appear.<\/p>\n

By delaying the onset of type 1 diabetes, it means those with early symptoms can live a fuller life before having to manage their condition with insulin.<\/p>\n

How Teplizumab works<\/p>\n

About 400,000 people in the UK have type 1 diabetes, a lifelong condition which causes the immune system to attack insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.<\/p>\n

Teplizumab trains the immune system to stop attacking those cells.<\/p>\n
