He methodically poked and prodded Verstappen’s defences — small looks and parries that minimised time lost — while his rival studiously covered the inside line, knowing it was his only hope of holding position.

Eventually he set up the move out of the hairpin, giving himself a good enough launch to run alongside Verstappen into the first turn and then forcing an error, taking the place after the Dutchman locked up and sailed off the road.

He took the lead just as Norris began homing in on the fight.

But when it was his turn to size up the Red Bull Racing driver, his attempts were less incisive and more costly.

His first attempt to cling around Verstappen’s outside saw him predictably run off the road at the first turn.

His next attempt was at turn 11, where he executed an overtake off the road and was forced to give back the place, costing him more valuable time.

Eventually a better run down to turn 11 — Verstappen’s tyres by now aching from exertion — got him ahead down the inside line before the braking zone.

But by then his race was lost. The battle had cost him seven seconds to leader Piastri. He took the chequered flag with a 4.6-second deficit.

It would be easy to conclude that Norris’s racecraft simply isn’t as sharp as Piastri’s, but that would be an exaggeration.

After all, to get to within striking distance of second place, the Briton had to pull off a fantastically inventive pass on George Russell through the sweeping first sector.

The difference was Verstappen.

How Piastri got Max to outbreak himself | 00:57

CARRY-ON BAGGAGE ONLY

Martin Brundle is in no doubt that Verstappen battles Piastri and Norris differently.

“I think he knows that there’s something a bit more street fighter about Oscar Piastri,” Brundle told the Sky Sports F1 podcast.

“I think Max knows he’s got a different animal when Oscar’s in his mirrors — not by much — [compared to] Lando.

“Just the positioning of the car, there’s a decisiveness about what he did.

“I have absolutely no doubt — and just words he says as well — that Max realises Oscar’s a different deal in wheel-to-wheel combat.”

But the argument cuts both ways. Undoubtedly Piastri and Norris race Verstappen differently too.

Piastri is almost unique among the frontrunners in that he has comparatively little history racing wheel to wheel with the Dutchman. Only rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli is similarly green.

Lewis Hamilton brings with him the scars of 2021, while Charles Leclerc has his own potted history from 2019 and 2022, the former when scrapping for rare wins and the latter with the title ostensibly on the line.

George Russell had his out-of-the-blue blow-up with Verstappen late last year after their disagreements at the Qatar Grand Prix.

And Norris has the baggage of his losing battles with the champion last season, almost all of which were coloured by him attempting to insert himself into the title fight.

Their crash at the top of the hill at the Austrian Grand Prix while battling for the lead was seminal, and while few saw it as anything other than Verstappen overreach, bizarrely Norris found himself making excuses on behalf of the Dutchman in the aftermath, unwilling to fight his corner despite his costly points loss.

Their battles later in the year, as McLaren’s star rose, became pricklier.

There was their fight for the podium in Austin, when Verstappen outmanoeuvred him with a better understanding of the rules to force Norris into an off-track overtake that ended with a five-second penalty.

Things stepped up a notch in Mexico, where Verstappen really threw his elbows out trying to beat the Briton, earning two 10-second penalties for efforts.

The thread between their various run-ins was that Verstappen dictated the play. Norris was always having to return often difficult or impossible serves.

Verstappen wasn’t always in the right, but by constantly pushing the envelope he established the dynamic between him and Norris on his terms, and it’s now constantly to his advantage.

Norris gets testy after Miami Grand Prix | 02:16

THE FIRST SIGNS OF FRUSTRATION

Breaking that dynamic is difficult, and it becomes increasingly difficult with each battle that passes.

That could now be crucial with a championship on the line.

Intriguingly Norris let slip some tiny signs of frustration after the Miami Grand Prix.

“It’s the way it is with Max – it’s crash or don’t pass,” he said.

“He’s fighting hard, but it’s up to him to do that.

“He’s ruined his own race. He’s not racing very smart. He probably could’ve finished third today, and he didn’t because of that. “

Of course Norris is right that third was probably possible for Verstappen had he simply waved the McLaren cars through and preserved his tyres, but that’s a fundamental misreading of the Dutchman’s motivation.

That was simply never going to happen, especially so early in the season. Norris’s would’ve known this deep down too.

Piastri, meanwhile, battles Verstappen totally unencumbered by such history. These two rivals are practically new to each other, and in these early days of combat the Australian’s cool and decisive moves have prevented the Dutchman from claiming the psychological upper hand.

It was interesting to hear Verstappen praise Piastri after being defeated at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix despite fuming over the stewards decision that penalised him for running off the track at the first chicane in a vain attempt to keep the McLaren behind.

“He’s very solid,” he said. “He’s very calm in his approach, and I like that.

“It shows on track. He delivers when he has to, barely makes mistakes, and that’s what you need when you want to fight for a championship.

“At the end of the day Oscar is using his talent, and that’s great to see.”

Verstappen’s compliments were probably genuine, but it’s difficult not to see them contrasting Piastri’s form with Norris’s slightly less clinical approach — and you have to wonder whether that was part of their purpose in a tactical little barb directed at the Briton.

‘If I don’t go for it people complain’ | 01:05

‘KEEP QUIET’

There’s been a lot made of Norris’s psychological make-up in this early phase of the season, with plenty speculating on whether the Briton has the mental fortitude to go the distance.

Norris has addressed this repeatedly, but an admission to the Guardian earlier this year about how he perceives his own approach is worth revisiting.

“What people want you to believe is you have to think you’re the best in the world, you have to think you can beat everyone,” he said. “That is a great attitude to have but I don’t think it’s the only attitude you have to have if you want to be a champion.

“I just don’t think you have to have that to be a world champion. I want to prove you can be a world champion and not have it.

“There are certain things I would not do that other champions have done. I don’t have as much of a killer instinct as probably most of the drivers or most champions because I was just not brought up that way.”

It’s up to Norris to prove whether he can win the title with what he describes as an unusual approach.

But four-time champion Alain Prost took exception to the way the Briton has been open about exploring his psychological make-up so publicly in a sport that’s won as much between the ears as it is on the circuit.

“Psychology is a crucial element,” Prost told L’Equipe earlier this month. “It already was in my day, but social networks have made it even more crucial to a driver’s success.

“Nowadays everything is shown, everything is experienced, everything is known. A lot of drivers are succumbing to this trend towards sharing.

“I think that in doing so they put themselves under a lot of pressure. Others choose discretion and, in my opinion, with good reason.”

The Frenchman opined that Norris was revealing his vulnerabilities to his rivals in a way that could damage his championship chances.

“The more you show yourself, the more fragile you become,” he said. “Lando is a driver whom I respect enormously, but if I had one piece of advice to give him, it would be to keep quiet and not to weaken himself like that.

“The consequences are enormous, and not just for his fellow drivers. There’s the image he’s spreading around the team.

“This is more important than you might think because it influences the impressions that the mechanics and engineers have, which are crucial.”

Prost’s critique is distinct from those who think Norris shouldn’t be self-critical, something the Briton says is a crucial part of his competitive process; it’s instead about how publicly the 25-year-old lays down his approach to competition, allowing his rivals to pick him apart before they’ve even taken the start.

For Prost, the contrast with Piastri is clear.

“We don’t know much about his life off the track,” he observed. “Naturally reserved, the Australian disappears between races and frees himself from this pressure.

“If I had one piece of advice to give him, it would be to keep quiet.”

Verstappen, meanwhile, doesn’t need advice. He’ll reliably insert himself into the conversation at the front, whether in title contention or not, and ask hard questions of the McLaren drivers who intend to usurp him.

So far Piastri has had the better answers. Norris is still formulating his.

The route to the 2025 championship runs through four-time defending champion Max Verstappen.
