The fire caused by the strike tore through the cathedral\u2019s roof and fa\u00e7ade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But on X, pro-Russian social media users have been claiming that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Russia<\/a> isn\u2019t to blame for the strike. They, along with the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, say that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/ukraine\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> was behind it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Was it all an elaborate plan by Ukraine?\u00a0<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Pro-Russian social media users have claimed in a number of X posts (including <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/JYSVD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/VFAIk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a>) that Ukraine had staged the bombing of the cathedral\u00a0\u2013 posts that have garnered more than 250,000 views since June 15. They say that the photos and videos showing the building on fire that have been shared by international media outlets are just part of the ruse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though filming bombings is banned in Ukraine,\u201d photographers equipped with \u201cprofessional material\u201d were conveniently positioned on the rooftops facing the cathedral ahead of the strike, alleged one social media user, who shared two images that supposedly show photographers preparing to photograph the strike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first image shows two men setting up a tripod on a rooftop with a view looking down on the cathedral in broad daylight. The real cathedral has a brown roof, as shown in these images taken before and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.franceinfo.fr\/monde\/europe\/manifestations-en-ukraine\/un-monument-emblematique-de-kiev-touche-par-les-flammes-apres-une-attaque-russe_8062370.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">after<\/a> the fire. The AI-generated image actually looks more like another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/kyiv\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kyiv<\/a> cathedral\u00a0\u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Sophia_Cathedral,_Kyiv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Saint-Sophia<\/a> Cathedral\u00a0\u2013 which does have a green roof.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Kyiv blames the strike on a Russian drone<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/mid.ru\/2118714\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> shared on June 15, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also blamed Ukraine for the strike on Dormition Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex was struck by a missile launched by a US-made Patriot air defence system. One possible reason for the malfunction of the system is that Western countries had supplied the Kyiv regime with missiles whose service life had expired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ministry, however, presented no proof or information that can be independently verified to back up this declaration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian authorities, however, as well as the SBU, the Ukrainian security services, say that Russia is responsible. The SBU reported that a Russian Geran-2 kamikaze drone bombed the Dormition Cathedral. The service shared images of drone debris that they said were found amongst the ruins of the cathedral.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The SBU shared <a href=\"https:\/\/ssu.gov.ua\/en\/novyny\/sbu-pokazala-ulamky-drona-heran-yakym-rashysty-vdaryly-po-kyievopecherskii-lavri-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">one photo of an MD-550 motor<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/war-sanctions.gur.gov.ua\/en\/page-shahed-136\/6334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">is used<\/a> in Geran-2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/tag\/drones\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drones<\/a>.
