YOUNG people in\u00a0Midlothian<\/a>\u00a0are being urged to sign up for an employability programme linked to the\u00a0Tour de France<\/a>, which will pass through the county when the world\u2019s most famous cycle race comes to Scotland next summer.<\/p>\n

Midlothian Council<\/a>\u00a0leader Kelly Parry is backing the Readiness to Work scheme, run by British Cycling as part of the Tour\u2019s Grand D\u00e9part GB social impact programme, which offers 18- to 25-year-olds hands-on volunteering experience at one of the sport\u2019s biggest events.<\/p>\n

The men\u2019s Tour de France is set to depart Edinburgh on 2 July 2027, with the opening stage sweeping through Midlothian and the Scottish Borders before finishing in Carlisle \u2013 putting the county on a global stage for the first time in the race\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Around 300 young people nationally will be selected for the Readiness to Work programme, gaining experience across event management, sport, marketing and professional services, alongside training in CV writing, interview techniques and personal development, backed by career mentoring.<\/p>\n

Delivered by British Cycling, the scheme forms part of the wider JOY social impact programme, which organisers say is designed to ensure the Grand D\u00e9part leaves a lasting legacy in host communities.<\/p>\n

Councillor Kelly Parry said: \u201cThe Tour de France coming through Midlothian in 2027 is an incredible opportunity \u2013 not just to showcase our communities on a global stage, but to invest in the future of our young people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would strongly encourage young people across Midlothian to sign up for the Readiness to Work programme.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt offers a unique chance to be part of a historic event while gaining practical skills, confidence and experience that can open doors to employment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know many young people are eager to get into work but need that first opportunity. This programme helps bridge that gap and ensures the benefits of hosting the Tour are felt right here in our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes amid figures from UK government-commissioned reports suggesting one million young people are currently not in education, employment or training, with 45% of 24-year-olds never having held a job, despite 80% wanting to work.<\/p>\n

Anyone aged 18 to 25 can apply via the\u00a0Grand D\u00e9part website<\/a>. Those aged 16 and over can also register separately as JOY Maker volunteers, with applications open until 1 September 2026.<\/p>\n
