&#8211; councillors throw out extension plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Unattractive and obtrusive&#8217; Solihull Council planners reject house extension plan<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Proposed-extension.jpg\" alt=\"The proposed extension to the property in Farnworth Grove, Castle Bromwich\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The proposed extension to the property in Farnworth Grove, Castle Bromwich(Image: My Arch1tect Ltd\/Solihull Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Solihull planners have thrown out a revised house extension plan described as \u201cunattractive\u201d and \u201cobtrusive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Last summer <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/solihull-council\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Solihull CouncilLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Solihull Council<\/a> planners gave the green light for a first floor side extension and two storey rear extension at a property in Farnworth Grove, Castle Bromwich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In February applicant Mohammed Bilal returned to the authority with a revised scheme &#8211; six from neighbours, one from Castle Bromwich Parish Council and one from ward councillor Alan Feeney who called the application into the authority\u2019s planning committee for a decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The parish council\u2019s comment submitted to the authority said: \u201cThis planning application represents over-development of the area with little thought given to the parking or supporting infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis will look out-of-place and is not in-keeping with the street scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Residents\u2019 objections also included concerns about a loss of light, loss of privacy, and the extension being \u201clarge\/bulky and obtrusive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At the committee\u2019s latest meeting planning officer Jon Hallam told the committee officers recommended the scheme be approved, subject to conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But during the debate of members Coun Dave Pinwell said: \u201cI believe the addition of the dormer here makes a significant difference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cMy view is that if Pablo Picasso had got into roof design, this is what we might have ended up with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe architect is clearly an advocate of cubism, we have little roofs everywhere here &#8211; that to my mind makes the thing quite unattractive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said properties in Bradford Road overlooking the garden at the rear were nearer to the property.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_House-extension.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The property proposed for an extension in Farnworth Grove, Castle Bromwich(Image: Google Maps)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThere is no question they would have to look at that if they look out of their rear windows,\u201d the councillor said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThat is not good quality design and it is not consistent with conserving and enhancing the local character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI think you get the message, I don\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Coun Bob Grinsell, chairman of the committee, said those comments had changed his mind completely on how he was planning to vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">When he moved to the vote seven committee members voted against, with just one in favour and one abstention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The authority\u2019s planning policy says proposed schemes have to be \u201chigh-quality\u201d and well-integrated with surrounding properties and members voted the formal reason for refusal was the extension would go against that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The decision was taken at the last meeting of the committee held at the Civic Suite on April 30.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#8216;Unattractive and obtrusive&#8217;
