{"id":105116,"date":"2025-05-16T02:31:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T02:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/105116\/"},"modified":"2025-05-16T02:31:14","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T02:31:14","slug":"eu-unlikely-to-get-rid-of-all-us-tariffs-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/105116\/","title":{"rendered":"EU unlikely to get rid of all US tariffs &#8211; Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission is preparing minds for a trade deal with the US which sees tariffs maintained on EU goods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith these tariffs the US thinks it has evened the playing field,\u201d EU official Matthias J\u00f8rgensen told MEPs\u00a0at the European Parliament on Thursday, \u201cIt&#8217;s very possible that we do not get rid of all the tariffs, then we might have to rebalance on our side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/icon-cross-10x10-grey-6.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\" alt=\"Close advertising\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Since mid-March, the Trump administration has\u00a0imposed 25% tariffs on EU steel and aluminium, 25% on EU cars and 10% on all EU imports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear from our discussions with the Commission that it will be difficult to go below 10% US tariffs,\u201d\u00a0a European diplomat told Euronews as the 27 EU trade ministers met on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would have a very hard time in the council with 10% tariffs,\u201d Michal Baranowski, Polish economic undersecretary of state, predicted.<\/p>\n<p>A member state&#8217;s official said France and Germany will be least happy with such an outcome while Hungary, Ireland, Italy would be less concerned.<\/p>\n<p>After several weeks of deadlock in the trade negotiations, some movement is now evident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is encouraging is that we are engaging actively both at expert and political levels,\u201d EU\u00a0Trade Commissioner Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d said, adding that he&#8217;d had a \u201cconstructive\u201d call with US trade secretary Howard Lutnick on Wednesday,\u00a0and that both agreed to intensify the talks\u00a0at technical level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sefcovic has already travelled three times to the US to meet counterparts. He seemed hopeful on Thursday that a meeting with Ambassador Jamieson Greer, the trade US representative, could take place soon in Brussels or on the sidelines of an upcoming OECD meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has put on the table\u00a0the possibility of facilitating imports of US liquefied\u00a0natural gas, AI technology and soybeans, and zero-to-zero tariffs on all industrial goods. J\u00f8rgensen told the MEPs that there was also room to \u201cstrengthen transatlantic investments\u201d, but ruled out negotiation on non-tariff\u00a0barriers such as EU legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be flexible. But it is quite clear: each side needs to continue to respect each other\u2019s regulatory autonomy,\u201d the official said, adding: \u201cEU legislation is not on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the EU doesn\u2019t manage to return to the status quo ante, the \u20ac95 billion list of retaliation presented by the Commission last week could be deployed to rebalance the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetting the current unbalance persist indefinitely is not an option,\u201d Sefcovic said, as US tariffs now cover 70% of EU exports to the other side of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Lobbying is under way over which US products should be listed &#8211; currently open to consultation by industries and member states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>France, Italy and Spain are vying to keep Bourbon Whiskey off the list to protect their wine and spirits from further US retaliation, as they successfully managed in the previous retaliation package which was suspended when US president Donald Trump announced a 90-Day pause in the trade war.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft sector is also a concern for some member states, since the US launched an investigation after the EU included Boeing in its new retaliation package.
