{"id":1052274,"date":"2026-06-26T22:46:39","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T22:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1052274\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T22:46:39","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T22:46:39","slug":"no-burnham-bounce-for-labour-in-london-by-elections-as-greens-win-four-out-five","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1052274\/","title":{"rendered":"No &#8216;Burnham bounce&#8217; for Labour in London by-elections as Greens win four out five"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/newsletter_we_final_embed_desktop.png\" alt=\"WEST END FINAL\" width=\"158px\" height=\"158px\" class=\"sc-bwGlVi dPPrjL\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Labour has failed to recover ground in a string of local by-elections in London, only weeks after they were hammered at the ballot box.   <\/p>\n<p>Two by-elections were held in Haringey and another two in Hackney, while one took place in Ealing.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the by-elections went the way of the Green Party, with Labour winning one in Haringey.<\/p>\n<p>The overall results mirror the outcome in the May 7 local elections, although the Northumberland Park and Woodside in Haringey both flipped between the two parties. <\/p>\n<p>Turnout fell as low as 13.8% in Dalston, Hackney.<\/p>\n<p>As many as nine by-elections have been scheduled in London within just weeks of the local elections, at a collective cost to taxpayers in excess of \u00a3200,000.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Elks, grassroots development manager at the TaxPayers&#8217; Alliance said: \u201cAnyone unwilling or unable to serve should never have stood for election in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalking away early leaves taxpayers funding avoidable by-elections and residents without the representation they were promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Hollinrake MP, Chairman of the Conservative Party, said: \u201cIt is shameful that, less than two months after the local elections, Londoners are already being dragged back to the polls because Green councillors don\u2019t want the job they were elected to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest took place just days after Sir Keir Starmer quit as Prime Minister, with newly-elected MP Andy Burnham widely expected to replace him in Number 10.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a full rundown of the results, and why the by-elections were held in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Northumberland Park (Haringey)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/green-party\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Green Party<\/a> candidate Jayon Henriques was elected in Northumberland Park on May 7, but was found to be ineligible to serve as a councillor. The party did not disclosed the reason for this. <\/p>\n<p>Ajda Ovat (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/labour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Labour<\/a>) ELECTED with 877 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Ian David Sinclair (Reform) &#8211; 106<\/p>\n<p>David Schmitz (Lib Dem) &#8211; 60 <\/p>\n<p>Labour\u2019s Hasret Bozdogan was elected in Haringey&#8217;s Woodside ward in last month\u2019s poll, but chose to step down for \u201cpersonal reasons that transpired after 7 May\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Elara Shurety (Green) ELECTED with 1,033 votes<\/p>\n<p>Thayahlan Iyngkaran (Labour) &#8211; 978<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Price (Reform) &#8211; 171<\/p>\n<p>Mikeleno Fureraj (Conservative)<\/p>\n<p>Rakeebah Rahim (Lib Dem) &#8211; 93<\/p>\n<p>The political makeup of the council following these results is: <\/p>\n<p>This means the council remains under no overall control, with the Greens running the borough as a minority administration. <\/p>\n<p>Simon Anthony (Green Party) was elected on May 7 in Ealing&#8217;s Acton North ward. He is believed to have quit due to ill health. <\/p>\n<p>Marijn van de Geer (Green) ELECTED with 804 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Gareth James Shaw (Labour) \u2013 642<\/p>\n<p>Abdi Ahmed (Lib Dem) \u2013 523<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Notley (Reform) &#8211; 309<\/p>\n<p>Sally Gorman (Conservative) \u2013 257 votes<\/p>\n<p>Craig Smith (Ealing Community Independents &#8211; Putting Acton First) \u2013 129<\/p>\n<p>Voter turnout was 24.21%. <\/p>\n<p>The political makeup of the council following these results is: <\/p>\n<p>This means the council remains under Labour control. <\/p>\n<p>Zo\u00eb Garbett (Green Party) was elected mayor in Hackney and was also also re-elected to her Dalston seat.
