However, an hour or so’s drive is a small price to pay when there’s a fantastic day or evening at the seaside awaiting you.

I’m aware the pleasant weather won’t last, which explains my determination to spend as much time outdoors as possible. Of my various coastal trips, one location particularly impressed me for one crucial reason – the food.

Troon, situated roughly 45 minutes from Glasgow, was the ideal spot to spend a warm evening as the heatwave drew to a close.

It’s been over six months since my previous visit to Troon, which took place on a bitterly cold and snowy January day. This week’s journey couldn’t have been more different.

After work one evening, we hopped in the car and made our way to the coastal town overlooking the Firth of Clyde, with one key objective in mind.

The weather was perfect for an evening stroll(Image: Nicola Roy)

Despite Scotland’s heatwave coming to an abrupt halt during the day with a torrential thunderstorm, the sun managed to emerge once more as we strolled along the shoreline. Likely due to the earlier weather, it was pleasantly peaceful, with just a handful of people wandering about on the sand.

While it was lovely to be able to walk on the beach without the bitter wind battering us like our previous visit, the stroll was fairly brief, as it was time to head up to the harbour to get some food. Finally, we got the chance to visit The Wee Hurrie for dinner.

The Wee Hurrie’s menu is so unique(Image: Nicola Roy)

The Scottish fishing fleet had been docked back in January, meaning it hadn’t been open – which, while entirely our own fault for failing to check ahead, still put a real dampener on the day, particularly given the bitterly cold conditions.

This award-winning chippy is renowned for its fresh seafood and its unique spot right on the harbour. And it was 100% worth the hype, being one of the best meals I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying.

The scampi was remarkably fresh, encased in a delicate batter that left me feeling neither bloated nor uncomfortable afterwards – a genuine rarity for a chip shop. Settling on just one dish was actually very hard, given how varied and distinctive the menu is.

The scampi from the Wee Hurrie is to die for(Image: Nicola Roy)

Where else would you come across fritto misto, noodles and lobster all on the same menu?

It came with some lovely tartare sauce and a lemon wedge, with a generous helping of salt and vinegar. Despite being light and crispy, it was also wonderfully filling and satisfying, and the portion sizes are hard to fault.

At £14.30, it was worth every last penny — I cannot stop thinking about it.

It’s strictly a takeaway, so there’s no seating inside, but plenty of folk were queuing up to place their orders before heading home. We stood outside the shack to eat, which speaks volumes about just how delicious it was.

Troon’s high street is full of independent shops(Image: Nicola Roy)

The food may well have been our main motivation for heading to Troon that evening, but with the weather remaining pleasantly mild even after we’d finished our meals, a stroll down the high street was an obvious next move.

By this point it was roughly 7pm, meaning many of the small independent shops and cafes had shut up shop for the evening, though the pubs appeared pleasantly busy, with folk popping in and out of takeaways, restaurants, shops or simply strolling about as we were.

If I hadn’t been driving, I’d have definitely stopped at Lido on the high street for a drink or two, but unfortunately that wasn’t on the cards this time round.

While it was a briefer visit than previously, it was far more enjoyable thanks to the delicious food and the glorious evening sunshine. Whether you’re in the area with a few hours to spare, or travelling from further away, Troon is a great place to discover.

After months of looking forward to this trip, it finally happened – and it was worth every bit…

[7826
748,918,4884,9419,712,183,16,15
post-1054741","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-glasgow","tag-britain","tag-glasgow","tag-great-britain","tag-places","tag-scotland","tag-travel","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom
["GET
