The usual suspect, Sefton Park, was the obvious choice, but a tiny little alternative a road away was just as appealing despite being a fraction of the size.

Nestled just a stone’s throw from Sefton and conveniently close to Smithdown, Greenbank Park is an oasis for visitors of all ages. This 18.8-acre park features playing fields, a children’s play area, ducks and a picturesque fishing lake that invites you to unwind and enjoy the outdoors.

While the park closes its gates at 10pm, it reopens bright and early at 5am – perfect for those who love a morning jog.

I, admittedly, never knew it existed, given the towering giant of Sefton Park casting a shadow over it. I actually struggled to find the entrance, under the impression I walked too far and backtracked before making another U-turn the right way.

Greenbank park and lake(Image: Christopher Megrath)

As I arrived, I was greeted by the screams and laughter of children with thick Scouse accents as they chased one another with water guns. The entrance was divided by a green pond, where I found a surprisingly large number of fishermen sitting peacefully along the water’s perimeter.

Given the size of the lake, I was taken aback by just how crowded it was. It was hard to imagine there were enough fish to keep everyone occupied, yet that didn’t stop some from pitching tents and fishing.

Mirroring the children at the entrance, I overheard nearly all of the fishermen speaking with the unmistakable Scouse accent. I only reference this because it was notably absent during my walk through Sefton Park, which, if I had to hazard a guess, was populated mainly by students and visitors from outside the city. I said to my partner: “This feel like the park where all the Scousers actually go.”

Fisherman dotted the perimeter(Image: Christopher Megrath)

After bypassing what sounded like Liverpool city welcome committee, my partner and I set up for our picnic. On the right side of the lake is a tilted green patch with benches allowing visitors to bask directly under the sun.

Despite the park’s size, it’s spacious enough to avoid overhearing other people’s conversations. There were plenty of people around but we could enjoy each other’s company without perking up to buzzwords from other groups.

To make the visit as cliché as possible, we even fed the ducks while staying arm’s length away from the geese, who were seconds from squaring up to us. There were plenty of squirrels, too!

There is plenty of wildlife(Image: Christopher Megrath)

As the sun began to set and a cool breeze replaced the blistering heat, we decided to walk the remaining length of the park, which would take a quick-footed visitor no more than five minutes from start to finish.

The far end of the park is covered by trees with a walking path leading out to Elmbank Road. There was no reason to wander further so we completed our lap back to the entrance.

There was no way either of us could’ve eaten a single bite more after clearing Sainsbury’s shelves, but it wasn’t lost on us the proximity of a popular little restaurant nearby. The Watering Can, which celebrated its seventh anniversary in April, is one of the best in Liverpool.

The end of the park takes you to Elmbank Road (Image: Christopher Megrath)

The venue has previously enjoyed numerous successes at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards, winning the LCR Hidden Gem Award in 2021 and Café Bistro of the Year in 2023, and being named a runner-up in Café Bistro of the Year in 2022 and 2024.

With the day done, picnic devoured, skin burnt and ears ringing with the Scouse accent, it was time to call this lovely trip to a lesser-travelled location a day.
