{"id":1057015,"date":"2026-06-29T07:14:32","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T07:14:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1057015\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T07:14:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T07:14:32","slug":"make-completes-leadenhall-skyscraper-for-the-city-of-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1057015\/","title":{"rendered":"Make completes Leadenhall skyscraper for the City of London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Located at the prominent junction of Leadenhall Street and Bishopsgate, One Leadenhall replaces the GMW Partnership-designed 1988 Postmodern Leadenhall Court.<\/p>\n<p>Make Architects\u2019 40,000m2 office tower incorporates 743m2 of retail and hospitality space and a publicly accessible terrace at level 4, overlooking Leadenhall Market.<\/p>\n<p>It sits south-west of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/level-14-leadenhall-building-by-rogers-stirk-harbour-partners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RSHP\u2019s landmark Cheesegrater skyscraper<\/a>, which completed in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The new building, for Brookfield Properties, aims to respond to its historic setting, including the Grade II*-listed market and nearby Grade I-listed landmarks. The tower steps down in height to complement the surrounding high-rise skyline while accommodating protected views of St Paul\u2019s Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-830767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Brookfield_One-Leadenhall_City-of-London_HuftonCrow_014-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2298\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>At street level, a colonnade is formed by sculptural columns and metal fins. Above this sits a three-storey Portland stone street block that, in turn, supports the tower\u2019s three staggered slender glazed volumes.<\/p>\n<p>A double-height reception on Leadenhall Street is finished in limestone and features two commissioned artworks by London-based designer Brodie Neill.<\/p>\n<p>Public realm improvements, such as widened pavements and extended cobbled surfaces, help strengthen connections to the market.<\/p>\n<p>The office floors are arranged around a central core providing column-free flexible floorplates with panoramic views across the City of London and the Thames.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-830768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Brookfield_One-Leadenhall_City-of-London_HuftonCrow_024-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2250\" height=\"2560\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Landscaped terraces at levels 29 and 32 have also been designed to mitigate wind and support year-round use.<\/p>\n<p>The building is already fully let, with global law firm Latham &amp; Watkins taking a large proportion of the building, alongside tech and flexible workspace tenants.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/city-of-london-backs-makes-36-storey-leadenhall-tower\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first given the go-ahead in 2017,<\/a> was revised in 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/make-trims-and-tweaks-city-of-london-tower-plans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shrinking the tower down from 166m to 158m<\/a> as well as adding more public realm around its base, while a proposed viewing platform moved 8m higher.<\/p>\n<p>Other changes included increased space for shops on the ground floor, alterations to the fa\u00e7ade of the \u2018street block\u2019, reduction in basement depth, wider pavements on Gracechurch Street and Whittingham Avenue, and refining the tower\u2019s massing.<\/p>\n<p>Both the Victorian Society and independent charity Historic Royal Palaces had objected to the previous proposal, the latter expressing concerns about its impact on \u2018iconic views\u2019 of the Tower of London, when seen from the east.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-830774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Brookfield_One-Leadenhall_City-of-London_HuftonCrow_043-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2520\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Architect\u2019s view<\/p>\n<p>Leadenhall Market is an incredible place, steeped in deep history.
