{"id":1057469,"date":"2026-06-29T12:30:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T12:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1057469\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T12:30:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T12:30:17","slug":"england-starting-right-back-vs-dr-congo-revealed-with-another-star-out-as-rice-return-decision-surfaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1057469\/","title":{"rendered":"England: Starting right-back vs DR Congo revealed with another star out as Rice return decision surfaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur star Djed Spence is set to start for England in their World Cup round of 32 tie against DR Congo.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/england\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>England<\/strong> <\/a>beat Panama 2-0 to seal top spot in Group L and a simpler route to the final of the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The Three Lions are now finalising their preparations for their round of 32 tie vs DR Congo, while matches against Mexico, Brazil and Argentina await in the later rounds.<\/p>\n<p>However, head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/tag\/thomas-tuchel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Thomas Tuchel<\/strong><\/a> has had several selection headaches at the start of the World Cup, and this is partly due to injuries.<\/p>\n<p>England have mainly have been impacted by right-back, with Tino Livramento ruled out of the tournament before Reece James missed the group game against Panama.<\/p>\n<p>In James\u2019 absence, Bayer Leverkusen star Jarell Quansah, who is a natural centre-back, filled in at right-back, but he was forced off during the Panama match with a twisted ankle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/bellingham-u-turn-confirmed-no-apology-england-world-cup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Is Bellingham still \u2018divisive soloist\u2019 and \u2018angry young man\u2019 who England shouldn\u2019t have taken to World Cup?<\/a><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And ahead of Wednesday\u2019s match against DR Congo,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2026\/jun\/28\/england-right-back-problem-jarell-quansah-likely-miss-dr-congo-djed-spence\" target=\"_blank\"> journalist Jacob Steinberg has told The Guardian that<\/a> Quansah is \u2018likely to miss\u2019 this game, while James back will also be unavailable for the game and is also \u2018increasingly unlikely\u2019 to feature in the round of 16 against Mexico or Ecuador.<\/p>\n<p>Without these two players, it is hardly surprising that Steinberg insists Spence is the \u2018favourite\u2019 and is \u2018expected to start\u2019 at right-back against DR Congo.<\/p>\n<p>England given Declan Rice \u2018boost\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Still, there is better news regarding Rice after he was rested for the Panama match, with Steinberg stating that the Arsenal midfielder is \u2018to return\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/england-thomas-tuchel-wearily-disgusted-opinion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England make Thomas Tuchel \u2018wearily disgusted\u2019 but it\u2019s all fine<\/a><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, Paul Scholes has explained why he thinks Elliot Anderson should start instead of Rice against DR Congo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngland don\u2019t need to play two sitting midfielders in the next game,\u201d Scholes said on The Good, The Bad &amp; The Football podcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo disrespect to Congo but in those type of games you play as many attackers as possible. I think it has to be a straight shootout between Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson, and I think I would just go with Anderson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he will pass it forward a bit more. Think about Rice with Arsenal\u2026 look, he\u2019s a great player and a great leader, I get all that, and you\u2019d rather him in your team than not most of the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Arsenal didn\u2019t play great football last season either, did they? Rice couldn\u2019t get [Martin] Odegaard in the game, so maybe that\u2019s transferred a bit to England.
