Luis Suarez says his decision to snub Arsenal<\/a> and stay at Liverpool<\/a> was the right call. The Gunners infamously bid \u00a340million plus \u00a31<\/a> in an effort to sign the Uruguayan in the summer of 2013.<\/p>\n

John Henry responded by telling Arsenal that Liverpool\u2019s star striker was not for sale<\/a> and Suarez remained at Anfield<\/a> for another season, enjoying arguably the best year of his career before joining Barcelona. But the 39-year-old admits he was, in fact, pushing to join Arsene Wenger\u2019s side at the time.<\/p>\n

He mentioned his own situation when discussing Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid, who recently told the Spanish club he wanted to leave. Alvarez, like Suarez at the time, is one of the most sought-after forwards in world football, with strong interest from Barcelona, Arsenal and Real Madrid being reported.<\/p>\n

But Suarez\u2019s recent comments suggest Alvarez, 26, may benefit and get his dream move to Barcelona later down the line by looking at the Liverpool great\u2019s career trajectory. The Inter Miami star recalled the impact Steven Gerrard<\/a>\u2019s words had on him at the time, which allowed him to give his all at Liverpool for another season in the “best decision” of his career in England.<\/p>\n

Suarez said in an interview on the programme El Larguero, broadcast by the Spanish radio station Cadena SER: “I faced the same situation myself when I was at Liverpool, and I said I wanted to go to Arsenal, I wanted to play in the Champions League<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    “The captain, Gerrard, came to me and convinced me, ‘If you have a great season, we\u2019ll help you and you\u2019ll be able to go to Barcelona, Real Madrid, wherever you want.’<\/p>\n

    “He convinced me, and I went out to apologise because my comments hadn\u2019t been appropriate at the time. I gave my all for Liverpool, the fans forgave me, and it turned out to be my best season at Liverpool.”<\/p>\n

    The Reds icon believes the Argentine, whose future at Atletico has been cast into doubt after he revealed his intention to join Barcelona, could benefit from staying put at the Metropolitano Stadium for another season.<\/p>\n

    Suarez continued: “Diego Simeone and the fans might convince him that this could be Atletico\u2019s year. Or perhaps Julian will stand his ground and say, ‘That\u2019s it.’ That depends on each person.”<\/p>\n

    Speaking about the World Cup winner’s qualities, he added: “Barcelona and any team in the world will want him and will be willing to pay whatever it takes because he\u2019s a great target man, he moves well between the centre-backs, he helps out a lot defensively, and he\u2019ll have wingers who\u2019ll provide him with plenty of assists. He\u2019s a fast, powerful player.”<\/p>\n
