{"id":1057896,"date":"2026-06-29T17:06:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T17:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1057896\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T17:06:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T17:06:15","slug":"eu-trade-chief-sets-october-deadline-to-resolve-china-deficit-row-euobserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1057896\/","title":{"rendered":"EU trade chief sets October deadline to resolve China deficit row \u2013 EUobserver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The EU\u2019s trade chief has set an October deadline to resolve a shopping list of trade disputes between Brussels and Beijing following talks with China\u2019s commerce minister Wang Wentao on Monday (29 June).<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was billed as the first of a planned series of trade and investment consultations between the EU and China and would seek to \u201cstabilise and make our bilateral relationship more balanced\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/statement_26_1480\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maros Sefcovic and Wentao said in a joint statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They also agreed to establish four \u201cworkstreams\u201d on trade and investment balancing, export controls, intellectual property rights and WTO reform.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the talks, China had warned that it was prepared to suspend economic and trade relations with the EU if negotiations continue without tangible results, according to China\u2019s state broadcaster.<\/p>\n<p>And the need for \u201ctangible results\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/speech_26_1344\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was repeated by Sefcovic<\/a> who said that the meeting had been needed to \u201cavoid unnecessary tensions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He described the talks, which continue into the evening, as \u201cpositive\u201d and \u201cvery constructive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EU remains open for business.
