The festival is organized by Birmingham\u2019s current poet laureate, 26-year-old Ayan Aden, who said the aim is to help people better understand Somali identity and the British Somali experience.<\/p>\n<p>Aden said Somali stories are often told by others rather than by Somalis themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a massive narrative void&#8230; oftentimes stories are told for Somalis rather than from Somalis themselves, and when you don&#8217;t have that authentic voice there are natural gaps,&#8221; Aden explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The British Somali story is one of resilience, it&#8217;s one of constantly pushing forward, it&#8217;s one of amazing hospitality and great values of unity and togetherness, these are the things that we want to introduce to people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re in a place in England where you&#8217;re not near any Somalis and the only voices you&#8217;re hearing are inauthentic voices, these are the things that you tend to miss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a massive narrative void,\u201d Aden said. \u201cOftentimes stories are told for Somalis rather than from Somalis themselves, and when you don\u2019t have that authentic voice there are natural gaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>30 June &#8211; Women&#8217;s Ciyaar Dhaqameed Night at the Happiness Events Hall, from 19:00 to late<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>30 June &#8211; Business and Careers Expo at Zymals Banqueting Suite from 12:00 to 18:00<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1 July &#8211; Role of Somali Diaspora: Roundtable at Birmingham City Council Chambers from 13:00 to 15:00<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1 July &#8211; Library Goes Blue and White at Birmingham Library at sunset<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>1 July &#8211; Flag raising ceremony at Victoria Square from 12:00 to 13:00<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>2 July &#8211; Who Owns Soomaaliya?
