{"id":1061892,"date":"2026-07-01T13:37:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T13:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1061892\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T13:37:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T13:37:17","slug":"uk-defense-plan-to-unlock-fresh-gcap-contract-before-farnborough-airshow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/1061892\/","title":{"rendered":"UK defense plan to unlock fresh GCAP contract before Farnborough Airshow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">ROME \u2014 The tri-nation industrial consortium behind the GCAP fighter program is set to get its next major contract before the Farnborough airshow this month, after the U.K. came up with essential funding on the day that cash flow for the jet was due to run out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Sources close to the program told Defense News the next contract was made possible by the U.K.\u2019s timely commitment of \u00a38.6 billion ($11.4 billion) over four years to the U.K.-Italy-Japan jet program in its its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/07\/01\/uks-starmer-unveils-20-billion-defense-boost-in-long-delayed-investment-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/07\/01\/uks-starmer-unveils-20-billion-defense-boost-in-long-delayed-investment-plan\/\">long-awaited Defence Investment Plan (DIP)<\/a>, which was published on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The cash means the three nations can now hand a contract before the biennial U.K. airshow near London to Edgewing, the industrial consortium representing firms from the three nations, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Originally due last year, the U.K. DIP was delayed as generals and politicians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/06\/11\/uk-defense-secretary-resigns-over-government-spending-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/06\/11\/uk-defense-secretary-resigns-over-government-spending-plan\/\">battled<\/a> over defense funds. With little sign of the row abating, the U.K.\u2019s partners on the sixth generation GCAP grew increasingly anxious over delays in the program, which is due to put a plane in the air by 2035.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">In April the partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/04\/02\/money-starts-flowing-for-new-gcap-fighter-as-britain-sorts-out-finances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2026\/04\/02\/money-starts-flowing-for-new-gcap-fighter-as-britain-sorts-out-finances\/\">signed a stopgap contract<\/a> to keep work going for three months to give the U.K. time to find long-term cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The joint program office created by the three nations announced the signing of a \u00a3686 million development contract with Edgewing, which teams local champions BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. (JAIEC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">On Tuesday, three months on, the DIP was unveiled by outgoing UK prime minister Keir Starmer, saving blushes in London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe money for the GCAP in the DIP is slightly more than the \u00a36bn we expected,\u201d said Francis Tusa, the editor of UK site Defence Analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Getting the cash was not however certain, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe Italians were irritated by the U.K. delay and the Japanese even more so. I was told that the Japanese prime minister threatened to pull out of a planned visit to the U.K. before the G7 in June and go and see the French instead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">During the U.K. visit by the Japanese, Prime Minister Starmer signed a commitment to find the funds, Tusa said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">It is believed that Andy Burnham, who is likely to become Britain\u2019s next prime minister, will seek to stand by the GCAP commitments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">After Edgewing is handed a contract to continue work on GCAP, it is expected to hand its own contracts to tri-nation consortia managing the electronics and propulsion on the jet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Tusa said the way forward for the jet was not entirely risk-free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThe British defense ministry wanted \u00a328 billion for the DIP and has received \u00a315 billion, of which \u00a34.7 billion still needs to be found in this year\u2019s budget. Additionally the ministry has to come up with \u00a310.7 billion in savings.
