It has since drawn 73 additional signatories, with six new institutional investors pushing combined investor AUM past the $1.14T (€1T) mark.

The latest additions include Swedbank Robur ($261B/€229B AUM), Länsförsäkringar AB ($47.3B/€41.5B), West Yorkshire Pension Fund ($25.2B/€22.1B), London-based Sarasin & Partners ($21.6B/€18.9B), French government employees’ pension fund Ircantec ($19.4B/€17B) and Dublin-headquartered KBI Global Investors ($7.4B/€6.5B).

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre travelled to Brussels shortly after the letter’s initial circulation — the latest in a series of 11 ministerial visits to the Belgian capital this year focused on energy policy, according to Bloomberg. Meanwhile, Norwegian state energy company Equinor has taken a fresh step toward developing the Wisting field, the world’s northernmost proposed oil development and the only new field currently under consideration in the Barents Sea, after its final investment decision was shelved in 2022 following environmental opposition.

The letter argues that new Arctic projects offer no near-term relief to Europe’s energy crisis, citing average project lead times of 13 years on the Norwegian continental shelf and longer still in harsher Barents Sea conditions. It contends that if the EU meets its 2040 climate targets, existing gas infrastructure across Norway, the UK and the EU would be sufficient to cover demand without new Arctic supply.

The coalition also challenged Norway’s reserve estimates, citing Rystad Energy analysis suggesting commercially viable resources are 78% lower than official Norwegian government figures, and warned that pipeline infrastructure required to bring Barents Sea gas to Europe would need long-term offtake contracts locking the continent into fossil fuel dependency beyond 2050.

Security risks formed a third line of argument. The letter warned that expanding oil and gas activity in waters bordering Russian territory and the Northern Sea Route would increase the vulnerability of energy infrastructure to hybrid warfare and sabotage — a concern echoed by Norwegian intelligence services, which have flagged a heightened and persistent threat level against assets on the Norwegian continental shelf over the past year.

“Companies and investors make investment decisions on time horizons measured in decades, and therefore depend on clear and predictable policy signals,” said Jacob Ehlerth Jørgensen, head of ESG at Sampension. “Such certainty helps channel capital towards investments that strengthen Europe’s energy security, competitiveness, and climate goals.”

The call has drawn support from five members of the European Parliament from Denmark, Sweden and Finland, who published a joint op-ed in Sustainable Views on Monday backing the moratorium.

The full list of 200 signatories is scheduled to be published at 6 a.m. CEST on July 6.

Join us at the Annual Nordics Sweden Institutional Forum Sampension, Swedbank Robur and West Yorkshire Pension Fund are…

[5174
291684,229084,3975,160641,14924,2000,229082,299,5187,1699,7159,73050,291685,291686,291687,1115,96949,291688,291689,291690,291691,291692
post-1062744","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-eu","tag-arctic-strategy","tag-barents-sea","tag-energy-security","tag-equinor","tag-esg","tag-eu","tag-eu-arctic-policy","tag-europe","tag-european","tag-european-union","tag-fossil-fuels","tag-institutional-investors","tag-ircantec","tag-kbi-global","tag-nordic-center-for-sustainable-finance","tag-norway","tag-open-letter","tag-sampension","tag-sarasin-partners","tag-swedbank-robur","tag-west-yorkshire-pension-fund","tag-wisting
["GET
